A vampire and a slayer walk into a bar... Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but for Veronica and Mackenzie, it's the beginning of the rest of their lives...
The world has seen its fair share of evil, but Veronica Chase had no idea such monsters truly existed. Werewolves, poltergeists, witches... even vampires. Ignorance was bliss. But her reality was crushed on that horrid day her family was taken away from her. Now, Veronica has devoted her entire life to hunting those very creatures, searching for the werewolf pack that murdered her parents in hopes of finding her abducted sister. Nothing will get in her way of settling the score for the hand she was unjustly dealt. That is until her newest assignment brings her to her knees.
After one hundred and eight years on earth, Mackenzie Jones thought he had seen it all. With the exception of daylight of course, but that's what comes with the territory being a vampire and all. Perpetually damned to live his life as a bartender in the shadows of the night, nothing has sparked his interest lately. Just once he wished something exciting would happen in his mundane life. Little did he know, his wish was about to come true. Walking through the door to his bar, and into his heart, Mackenzie allows love to take the wheel for the first time. There's just one slight problem. She's there to kill him.
Bebe Knight is the author of The Eternal Flame Series, a series of paranormal romance novels. She lives in Upstate NY with her husband and son. She graduated from the State University of New York at Albany and holds a B.A. in Fine Arts and Art History.
Mack and the rest of the Jones are vamps, but they live as humanly as possible - working, eating food, and drinking synthetic blood!!
They are vamps though, and as such don't do churches, garlic, sunlight and need inviting in your home. Well Macks welcome in mine!!
Mack works as a bartender and is rather good looking and girls flock around him, but his not interested in them, enter Veronica a hunter of the supernatural, and Mack is her next target......upon sight she can't help but notice how gorgeous he is, as does Mack, so not surprisingly she fails her job.
This is paranormal romance so of course it's insta love, but Mack is very nice. It's not all love though there is more at stake than there hearts and all is revealed through the book. If I'm honest I found the book a slow starter, it wasn't uninteresting just a lot of background on both Mack and Veronica's side, I was just desperate for the two to meet but then I'm impatient!! Once into the story it keeps pulling you in and through me a surprise or two.
We have the evil Ethan, and he really is horrible and above himself and makes your skin crawl. Bryce is under Ethan, but tries to protect a caged woman from the evil Ethan who he has treated very badly (I did say caged!).
In the book you have vampires, werewolves, hunters , witches are even mentioned!
Sex, there's definitely sexual tension and a sex scene or two but not overly drawn out, they actually find time to eat!
My favourite character was Mack, his the one I got more of a feeling for and Veronica comes in a close second.
There are plenty of characters in this book for it to be continued as a series, which I would be happy to read.
Star rating I liked this book and its characters. 3.75 stars
***i received this book from the author for an honest review***
This book was given to me by the author through PR&ATR for an HONEST review.
Ok, so... in this book at the very beginning you meet Veronica... Her parents murdered and sister presumed dead by everyone... everyone but Veronica...
Veronica has gotten a new job since her family's horrible happenings... Later in we find that a werewolf had been the one to kill her parents and that Veronica is a hitman..err...hit-woman...? lol either way... Mackenzie is a bartender and for the way girls seem to be drawn to him... I was surprised that he didn't have a different one in his bed each evening...err...morning.. lol Veronica is sent to kill Mackenzie...being the paranormal hitwoman.. and she durr... notices that Mackenzie is H.A.W.T.!! Mackenzie in return takes a liking to her as well...
Ethan made me just..sooo.... grrr!!!
Bryce did too for a while.... until protecting the caged girl.. so..maybe.... not all bad in the long run maybe?
The book is more than just love and romance....it was a mystery and some really awesome plot twists... and some really well written sex scenes.. not unreal.. and I wasn't ready for the story to end... I really am hoping that somehow this becomes a series because I want to read more about the others :)
The plot embroiled vampires, ware wolves and humans in a fanciful clash. However, if you like to read about inhuman creatures that terrorize innocent citizens, this isn't the book for you. The well-rounded characters are all too normal and you'll have no trouble understanding the altered condition they find themselves in. However, just like people around the normal world, some are flawed.
Naive and grieving for her murdered family, Veronica is roped into a job for which she is ill-equipped. She's in for a surprise when she faces the man she is sent to kill single handed. You'll feel plenty of emotion in this well-written novel, but the only thing you'll taste is cooked steak and raw blood. The sense of smell is accentuated during peak times, and descriptions give a good idea of the unoccupied houses that surround the areas Veronica visits.
Once I suspended belief that such creatures exist among people, I found the book highly entertaining and well worth a read. Be prepared for some sizzling love scenes.
This is a great addition to the collection of anyone who likes paranormal romance, or romance in general!
The book is a fun read, filled with likeable (and hate-able in some cases, like Ethan) characters that you can get attached to almost immediately, as well as an involved plot that will keep you moving from chapter to chapter. I rooted for the main couple since the very start, but also found myself invested in all of the other characters' individual storylines. :)
Definitely a recommended read! You will want to stay with these characters long after you finish the book. :)
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a DNF at page 37 due to lack of anything happening and way too much unnecessary information.
The blurb for this book sounded fantastic, and was what drew me to volunteering to read and review. However, once I started reading, I kept wondering when the story was going to get started. (It did not start with the H/H meeting in a bar as the blurb suggests.)
Too much time was spent describing little mundane daily activities, such as Mac's shift at a bar, or Veronica going to a graveyard. While I'm sure her parents' death will play an important role in the story, it wasn't really something that we needed to know straight off the bat. (Or be told about it again, and again...) Nor did we need to know the names of all of those people hanging out at her house (I lost track of who was who, and what they were supposed to be doing). The first 37 pages could've been reduced to ten or fifteen pages, and been just as effective.
There was no tension, no mystery, and no connection to the characters.
Which brings me to the characters...
The "villain" of the book was the worst for me. He was very one-dimensional and a caricature of B-movie villains. He had no depth, no real motive for what he was doing that I could pick up, just that he wanted to get a group of vampires. He even declares to himself that he *is* evil, and that humans needed it every once in a while. Okay, but HOW is he evil? The first rule of writing is to show, not tell.
I also couldn't connect to either Veronica or Mac. I think this is because too much info-dumping prevented me from feeling the emotions and thoughts of either of them. We were told the little details of every person mentioned in the story, which led me to eventually skimming to find the character-related information.
I'm not sure if I read the same book as everyone else here, but while there is potential in this book, it needs a good editor to make it more readable. I'm not trying to be mean, but I dreaded turning on my Kindle this morning, because that meant I had to read more of this story. That was my clue to give up, as reading should be fun.
Just do a little condensing, chop out the backstory until it's necessary, and focus more on the characters--it has the potential to be a good story.
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.
Firstly I would like to thank Bebe Knight, for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this book.
Well, this book is quite awesome and the concept is portrayed very well though the concept is not fresh and has been used several times before but I liked the various twists that the author added here and there making the read interesting and intriguing. I liked the writing style as well and felt it comfortable and it was enriched too.
The characterization is great and the characters are well developed and not sketchy. Veronica’s character is my favourite in this story, I liked her kick-ass attitude and her bravery, she is confident and swift in her killing skills. Mackenzie’s character was also well portrayed but Veronica’s charm seemed to overshadow him, at least for me.
The action scenes are breath-taking and are vividly described which helped me visualize the scenes while reading. There is suspense and mystery which kept me hooked in the story till the end and the passionate romance touched my heart. The struggle for achieving their love and fighting against your own people – this concept impressed me quite a lot and the emotions have been portrayed perfectly so that it touched the heart of the readers.
Over all a great read and I would recommend it to ya all and hope that you guys will love it as well. Enjoy!!!
An Element of Time is an excellent book in the start of a very promising paranormal romance series! Veronica is the heroine in this book, and she's carrying a world of grief inside from the loss of her parents and her sister, Stella. There is also a lot of resentment, and Veronica becomes a hunter of those that took the ones she held dear away from her.
This book isn't your typical lighthearted paranormal romance. There are a lot of dynamics that come into play as she's working through her assignment, deeply-entrenched hurt, and her dislike of the very ones she's hunting. The author has done an amazing job of developing her characters, leaving the reader with feeling as if they've just experienced the pitfalls that lay between them! Like I said earlier... This is definitely the start to a very promising series.
Can Veronica and Mackenzie overcome the major hurdles that are thrown in their path? I'm not giving that away... The journey to discovering the answer was very intriguing, and something you need to really experience for yourself! If you're a paranormal romance lover, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. I know I did.
