As an 18 year old girl reading this book, I found it kind of silly. But I'm sure if I had been 12 or under I would have loved it. This book is a chapter book based on the movie The Cheetah Girls, which is based on a book series written by Deborah Gregory. It is immaturely sarcastic and Ms. Gregory is highly affectionate in her use of Latina slag, which I would have foolishly used and thought I sounded cool.

The basis of this story is about four young, high school girls living in New York and trying to make their dreams of becoming a famous girl group a reality. They go through family troubles, boy drama and even face a few problems within the group but by the end of the book they, of course, work everything out.

The Cheetah Girl Movie (Updated)
Galleria, Channel, Aqua, and Dorinda perform their song “Together We Can”at Pucci (Chanel’s brother’s) birthday party. Despite some “technical errors” (the heel of Aqua’s cowboy boot and Dorinda slipping doing a one-armed flip) Galleria thinks they’re ready for the Magnet High talent show coming up.

After the party, they split up. Do has lessons (and unknown to her friends a secret job cleaning up the dance studio) and Aqua has a college course. Chanel vents it’s harder with four girls than it use to be with just her and Galleria, but Galleria says now they look like a real girl group. Galleria assures “Chuchie” they got this at the talent show and when in doubt think of “the dream”. They promise when they make it they’ll buy a big high rise apartment and be friends forever.

They pass a record store where a popular singer Scherezade song starts to play and they start to put on a show right there on the side walk. They’re so good they attract the attention of people passing by and they stop to watch and applaud them. Galleria hears a dog, thinks of her own dog (Toto), and realizes she’s late to walk him. She grabs Chuchie’s arm and rushes home. Dorothea isn’t happy when Galleria gets home. Not only has she forgotten to walk Toto, she’s forgotten to give her a message from one of her clients. Franco asks if she’s brought the capers home but she’s forgotten those too. He tells her to bring her pretty head down from the clouds.

Then Galleria tells them about her plan to win the talent show, make a demo, put it in a big time producer’s hands, and then it’ll be nothing but dollar signs. Her mother says its good to have a dream but she’d better start paying attention to her responsibilities NOW (as in go walk Toto). When Channel gets home, Juanita (her mom) is raiding her closet and barely listens as she tries to tell her about hitting a high C at the party. Then she rushes off on her date with Luc (the guy from Paris she’s dating). Later, Chanel and Galleria are on the phone and Juanita’s still not back. Galleria plays Chuckie some of the new song she’s’ working on (approved by Toto who dances along).

Derek and Mackerel come to the CGs at school, and request they change times with them for the audition. Mackerel says he has a dentist appointment that his mom will lose her ish if he misses. Channel says that’s fine. She has to meet with her teacher about her history test. (Minutes before Galleria declared a emergency study session when Chuchie asked did the Louisana purchase have something to do with gumbo). Dorina says it’s cutting it close but then also agrees when Galleria asks her what does she always have to do. After the boys leave, Aqua and the others tease Galleria about Derek liking her. Galleria brushes it off and says he’s just trying to distract them and she’s not falling for it. But after he and Mackerel fall after bumping into someone, she has to admit he is cute.

After the perform “Cinderella”, Drinka gives them the green light. They’re in! She says she’ll even work with them to make sure they win. Or says a tall, blond, man whose been watching maybe he will. It’s Jackal Johnson (famous record producer). Galleria jumps in and takes the lead and introduces herself, says she wrote the song, and she’s the founder. The other girls give each other a look like since when. She says she’ll be glad to record the song for him and he says let’s set something up. But Doretha swoops in and escorts them away. Jackal gives Galleria his card and says to call him when their ready to record.

On the way home, Doretha comments on Dorinda seeing nice and asks what her parents are like. Galleria says she has a little sister. That’s all they really know. Her parents trust her and aren’t all up in her business. Doretha tells her she got in the talent show. Don’t spoil the day because she didn’t get everything she wanted. They’re silent the rest of the way home, but once home they get into an argument. Doretha tells her the bottom line is she’s not ready.
Channel vents to Juanita but she says that she thinks Dorothea’s right. Jackal is tacky. Not like the
men in Paris and Luc. She says shopping will take Channel’s mind off it. Then she’ll talk to Dorothea. Only she wants Channel to consider living in Paris. Galleria calls and she’s also venting about her mother not letting her call Jackal.

Franco convinces Doretha to let Galleria talk to Jackal but under the conditions that she come to the meeting and if she sees something she doesn’t like their out. Franco says … and she promises to keep an open mind. Galleria says the day has been crazy and Channel tells her she was a little crazy. Since when is she the founder of the CG’s. Galleria says she didn’t mean it like that. She’s just doing what it takes to make sure the CG are out there. Chuchie knows this is true and thinks that’s a good thing.

Dorinda finds out the dance studio is closed on Saturday. They’ve rented the space to the Gold Medal Crew video people. Dana says she can help her run the auditions and she’ll credit her for the lessons. That night, Galleria plays the music for “Girl Power”. She says she’s ready for Jackal (to Toto). She just hopes the others are. Galleria and Doretha get stuck in traffic and finally decide to walk (despite Galleria’s heels). In the meanwhile, Jackal’s gives the others a tour of their new home “Def Duck Records”. When Galleria gets there -to her embarrassment- she’s stepped in dog crap and it’s obvious.

When they get back, the deals already done. Jackal was sold when Aqua pulled out a bottle of Hot Papa’s Hot Sauce from her purse. Something Galleria told her stars don’t do earlier and to ditch when she saw Jackal. Jackal wants them to record on Saturday. Doretha isn’t happy. That’s less than a week. Chanel remembers the talent show. Galleria says they’ll be there without a thought to it. Doretha says they aren’t singing anything until her lawyer looks the contract over thoroughly.

Galleria starts feelin herself a little too much and the kids at school put out a bashing Cheetah site. Aqua and Dorinda tell Channel they need to check her girl. She says she will but to herself she adds when the time is right. At rehearsal, Galleria is out of line and tells Drinka they need to practice their song first. She says they’ll try their best to be at the talent show but you know how it is. They have to record on Saturday and Drinka should know that when opportunities are gone you don’t get them back. Drinka politely tells her that she might not have fame but she has her word. Dorinda says she has to go and Galleria dismisses her and tells her to go ahead. She mostly just dances anyway.

Then she gives her a folder of outfits, so the next time she sees Jackal she can put something together so she won’t look janky and tore up. Dorinda rips up the folder and asks her how’s that for tore up and janky and leaves. Aqua tells Channel the time is now to talk to Galleria. Andre sees Dorinda helping the people auditioning and is impressed. He invites her to tour with the Gold Medal Crew for 10 weeks.

Channel comes home ready to go shopping but Juanita isn’t there. She’s gone to a Broadway show with Luc but leaves her credit card and tells Channel to buy something they’ll both look tight in. Gail from the realtor office calls to tell Juanita that if she steal wants to put her house up, give her a shout. Channel shouts at the dial tone no one’s moving and then takes the card and stays oh yeah she’ll have a good time.

Channel does some crazy shopping and heads to Dorinda’s thinking maybe the clothes will inspire her. But the doorman says there’s no Thomas’s there. Channel describes her and he says she’s down stairs in the super’s apartment. Chanel is surprised to find out that Dorinda’s mother, sister, are black. Channel is surprised hat she tried to hide that she’s half-black. That’s when Dorinda confesses that she’s not sure what she is. She lives with Mrs. Bosco whose not her mother and ten other foster kids. Her real mother gave her away. She says but it’s the best she’s had and begs Channel not to take it from her.
Channel tells her sometimes having a mom isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Dorinda tells her the same. Channel says still, she’s a CG for life.

She apologizes for Galleria and hands her one of the bags with a cheetah vest. Dorinda confesses to her that the Gold Money Crew asked her to tour with them and she really needs the money. Galleria and Channel prepare for their first session. Galleria shows Chuchie a cover for their demo but she’s in the front and her picture is bigger than the others. She says she did write the songs when Channel asks her why this is. Channel argues back that they ALL contributed and Galleria says she’s just the artist, Doretha tells them she’s allowing them to go to the session alone to see how they handle themselves but don’t stay up all night gabbing. Channel tells Galleria she’s not her flunky and stop trying to handle her when Galleria tells her to remember the dram. She tells her she found out Do is a foster child and Galleria tells her that she needs this more than anyone. Chuchie corrects her and tells her she needs friends. They all do.

Galleria tells her friends help friends achieve their dreams not getting what Chuchie is saying. She tells her don’t worry and she’s sure Jackal will have ideas about the cover. Surprisingly, after they perform “Girl Power”, the CG’s find out Jackal wants to turn them into a group called “The Global Get down.” The group will be centered around endangered animals and they’ll each where a mask. Galleria will be a Cheetah, Channel a snow leopard, Aqua a seal, and Dorinda a panda. Galleria says no. Jackal says that’s what they sold the record company.

The CG tell Galleria that maybe they need to do it this way first. Aqua tells her the group isn’t all about her and that’s what she’s been about lately and she just doesn’t want to take the deal because it’s not her songs. Channel says they can’t trust her anymore. Galleria says she’s taking herself out the equation. They’re now on their own and can accept the deal. Jackal isn’t phased and says they can get another singer and move Channel to lead mic. She thinks hmmm. Lead? But then Aqua looks and her and she says it’s too much. They’ll have to think on it. Jackal says call him when their ready for prime time.

When Channel gets home, her card has been declined and she hits the ceiling. She says she trusted Channel. Channel says she trusted her to pay attention. But then Channel gets emotional and says she did it because she thought they’d be rich. Then she goes a little deeper and says she did it because Luc came around and it seemed like her dreams didn’t matter but then she’s seen what its like to not have a mom and she thanks her for always keeping her in her dreams and confesses to her that the CG’s are over.

Galleria vents to her parents. She thought they were all on the same page. Franco says she did what she thought was right. Doretha says it’s not worth ruining her friendship. Galleria asks how can they be friend’s again. They want fame and their ways but there are ways. She wants fame the Cheetah Girl’s way. Franco wisely ask her the CG’s way or *her* way. She says you either walk with the devil or you don’t and she knows she was right. Wasn’t she?

At school, Derek hears her playing the intro of “Cheetah Sisters” and says it sounds like something. Not the fluff she usually writes. She then tells him about Jackal’s ordeal and laughs about the CG’s being extinct. He says welcome to the world of being an artist. Sometimes you have to go at it alone. But she can do it. And he’s not saying that because he just wants to win the talent show.

On the night of the talent show, Doretha suggest that have a family night and watch Galleria’s favorite movie (The Wizard of Oz). She says she doesn’t even think that’ll cheer her up. She tells her mom, she’s going to head to the talent show to give her support. On the way she sees a poster in the window of a store announcing the Global Get Down and can’t believe they took the deal. She accidently lets go of Toto’s leash and he flies off and ends up down a hole. It’s all over the news. The power is shut off. The CGs hear about it and show up. They’re able to get him out by singing “Together We Can” which makes him move and dance. After it’s all over they tell Galleria they’re glad he’s ok and walk away.

Derek comes over to her and tells her they came running when she put out the Cheetah distress signal. She says no. They came for Toto. Still she decides to sing one last song for her friends and starts “Cheetah Sisters”. Soon, they all join in and Derek kicks in with his guitar. After they’re announced the winners of the talent show, Galleria says at least that got one last song together. But it turns out they didn’t take the deal. Dorinda even let someone else do the tour. Jackal calls but they all tell him basically he blew it and they’ve moved on!

My Thoughts.
This was so easy to write up that I could practically see the scenes in my head. YES! I remember it like it was yesterday when this movie debuted. I recorded everything leading up to it. I bought the CD so the night the movie debuted I knew all the songs by heart. My cousin and I t were in front of the television on the Disney Channel the day of August 15, 2003. THE MEMORIES!

The plot was so good showing the strength of these four friends that come together despite their differences of opinion through the unification of a fluffy, white, dog, named Toto. Proving the "Girl Power" of these "Cheetah" (licious) "Sisters"

. The cast was (dead on) perfectly picked from the books, With only one member of the Cheetah Girls original books not being represented. (In the books Aqua has a twin by the name of Angie). And the only mistake was in the books Dorinda was black or half black. (She had a white biological sister). It would have been nice if it would have kept the character black (and stayed true to the book) but it didn’t bother me *that* much at the time. It was more about the excitement of the movie.

The songs were bubbly, bouncy, and catchy, And even today on occasion if I come across them on my I POD I'll press play. Cause how could you not love songs about being independent (and not being the kind of female that needs a prince), celebrating your identity and recognizing you are FIERCE (Girl Power) and the powerful anthem about having your girls by your side (Cheetah Sisters)? It just makes you wanna throw on a cheetah print article of clothes and bop right along to the beat and be a Cheetah yourself. And I’ll be completely honest with you, I tip my hat to whomever wrote these songs because the ones in the book, YEAH they left A LOT to be desired.

I LOVED that strong, feminist, inspired message in this movie! It was a delight to watch from the opening music of "Together We Can" to the last words of Galleria to Jackal "Tell him the Cheetah Girls are unavailable". Since this book was word for word of the TV movie (and I pretty much know it by heart) whenever I read this (or see the movie) it stirs up good memories of two, young, girls, singing and dancing excitedly in front of the television set.
