A hundred years ago, a distraught young woman sacrificed her young children to the raging waters of the Rio Grande. She became La Llorona, or the Wailing Woman, a ghostly apparition in eternal search of her little ones. Legend, or the evil stalking the river banks, claiming new victims.
La Llorona (yo-row-na) is a thematic collection that includes the self-titled short story about the chilling evil in a mother who can kill, and extends the collection to touch on notorious figures such as Casey Anthony, Susan Smith and others in essay form and in poetry.
I continue to enjoy Ms. Garcia's excellent writing style and her ability to take me away, to Texas and the environs near the Rio Grande. This time, I learned about a ghostly legend, and I enjoyed her fictional take on the story. Chilling! I also loved her thoughts regarding the third twin. A compelling read, which will stay with me for a long time.
This story is spine tingling and chilling to read. Don't read it alone on a dark stormy night because it leaves you with an eerie feeling long after it's finished. You will find yourself looking in dark corners or jumping at unexpected sounds. A truly haunting tale. Well done, Leslie Garcia!
