FEEDBACK
Author: J S Holloway Title: Sudoku for Xmas
COVER: 9/10 The readers very much liked the cover. They thought it was very ‘seasonal’, important for a Christmas book, the fonts easy to read and fun and, when a copy of the cover was printed and held up to the Reading Groups, everybody instantly knew the genre. One of the readers thought the cover was a little ‘tacky’; almost TOO Christmas. He put in his feedback, ‘Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this book very much but I felt a little overwhelmed by so much colour and glitter. So much so, I found it difficult to concentrate on the puzzle.’
CONTENT 9/10 All of the 21 readers who looked at this book enjoyed it very much. They liked the fact there was a mix of difficulty and that there were 52, 1 for every week of the year. Many of the readers commented on the colourful illustrations and, in general, thought it would make a very nice Christmas present for a beginner or even slightly advanced Sudoku player. One reader put, ‘I enjoy reading the books sent to us by The Wishing Shelf Awards but, I must say, it made a nice change to have a go at a puzzle book. I hardly ever do Sudoku but I enjoyed this collection very much. I even spent half the night trying to complete Puzzle 30. I think my husband got upset with me in the end.’ One reader spotted that you plan to put out a Sudoku book for different seasons and for horse lovers etc. He thought they might be fun to collect. Oddly, one reader suggested putting a Christmas poem or Carol on every page along with the puzzle. Interesting thought. Another reader put, ‘I’m 27 and I love Ferraris; the design of this book is not for me. If it had red sports cars all over it, I’d loved it. The Sudoku was good but the pics just felt too Christmas contrived. But I’m a cynic. If you ever do produce a Sudoku for Car lovers, send it my way.’
EDITING 10/10 With a book of this nature, there is very little to say regarding editing. But, for what it’s worth, the readers did not spot any punctuation, spelling or grammatical errors in the small amount of writing there is.
STYLE 10/10 This is where the book scored very highly. Normally, the readers look at the style of the writing but, in this case, they looked at the style and composition of the book. All of them felt every page was well designed and would be perfect for a cosy evening in during the cold winter months. One reader put, ‘What a wonderfully designed puzzle book. Not only did I enjoy working on the Sudoku, I also enjoyed the many illustrations. I looked at this book in February and it made me wish for snow!’
STATS Of the 21 readers: 20 thought the cover was excellent; 1 thought it was a bit too ‘cute’. 21 of the readers would like to have a go at other books in the set. 7 of the readers, all men, suggested you design a really ‘manly’ book of Sudoku e.g. Sudoku for Battle Tank Lovers. They thought it would be a big hit and fill a gap in the market. All 21 readers congratulated the designers for the tremendous amount of work that must have gone into making this book.
‘Challenging and fun. Perfect for any Sudoku lover.’ The Wishing Shelf Awards
