After watching movies and reading books like:
The hunt for Red October (Tom Clancy) starring Sean Connery as the Soviet captain of a submarine during the cold war.
The Queen's Gambit (Walter Tevis) also a Netflix adaptation, where Beth a chess prodigy learned Russian at a local college, where the students discussed the worthy goal of being able to read Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой , Tolstoy's War And Peace, Russian: Война и мир, romanized: Voyna i mir. (Was it that book? Now I need to go check! Or maybe you know for sure!) P.s. some of the letters in that book was written in French by the Russian nobility of the book! And there's also some German in the original book.
There are scenes in The Queen's Gambit where the Russian language is spoken (enough to make you fall in love with the language) where Beth is able to understand the language and turn this knowledge to her advantage.
Then I thought that if I could just learn a bit of the language!!! After all, Russian has over 258 million in total speakers worldwide and is the most spoken Slavic language.
And now, I found out that this is on audible for free! Well almost, as you need to be a member with monthly subscriptions.
It is a bootcamp all right.....
It is not just that the language is written in cyrillic, the nominal declension has six cases:
Nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental and prepositional.
So in Russian, it is not enough to know what a noun means, you will have to know its declension as the changing form of a word to express its syntactic function in the sentence.....
There is also its gender to consider as feminine, masculine or neuter!
Don't get me started with the plural of all these forms....
The low rating of the book reflects the difficulty of the language, not the course itself.
I am grateful to have had an introduction to the language, culture and history for free !
