It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (Updated)
Charlie Brown asks Snoopy how he likes a pile of leaves that he spent all morning raking. Linus charges head first into the leaves, but discovers you should never do this with a wet sucker. Linus writes the Great Pumpkin he’s looking forward to his arrival on Halloween night. He says he hopes he’ll bring him lots of presents.

Charlie Brown asks him who he’s writing too. Linus says this is the time of year when you write to the Great Pumpkin. On Halloween night, the Great Pumpkin rises out of his pumpkin patch and flies through the air with his bag of toys for all the children. Charlie Brown calls him crazy and asks him when he’s going to stop believing in something that isn’t true.

Linus says he’ll stop when Charlie Brown stops believing in “the fellow with the white beard that goes ho ho ho!” Lucy tells him he’s making her the laughing stock of the whole neighborhood. She says he’s all everyone talks about and threatens that if he doesn’t cut it out, she’ll pound him.

Linus says there are three things he’s learned never to talk about with people (religon, politics, and the Great Pumpkin) I actually agree with all three. Sally tho thinks its cute and says Linus is intelligent. Linus invites Sally to sit in the pumpkin patch with him and wait for the Great Pumpkin. With hearts in her eyes she accepts.

Charlie Brown is excited because he got an invitation to Violet’s Halloween party. It’s the first time someone’s every invited him to a party. Lucy says it must be a mistake. There were two list. One to invite and one not to invite. The kids bad mouth Linus but Sally comes to his defense and says maybe there is a great pumpkin. Every year Linus misses trick or treat so it must be a reason. Charlie Brown says he’ll never learn.

So, they go trick or treating. Snoopy’s costume is a WW1 fighting ace. Then they’ll go to the big Halloween party. On the way they stop by the pumpkin patch. A hopeful Linus asks if they’ve come to sing pumpkin carols. Lucy calls him a block head and tells him he’s going to miss all the fun. Linus scolds her and tells her not to talk like that because the Great Pumpkin knows if you’ve been naughty or nice and she’ll be sorry. Lucy just dismisses this and tells them to come on. They can’t waste all night with this fool.

Sally comes back and Linus tells her he’s glad she’s there. He’s full of excitement that the Great Pumpkin will pick his pumpkin patch because it’s the most sincere. Meanwhile, the kids are talking about what they got. Someone got a chocolate bar. Someone got a quarter. Someone got five pieces of candy. Poor Charlie Brown just got a rock! The other kids come back and taunt Linus somemore about missing trick or treating and now he’ll miss the Halloween party.

Sally (ever faithful) tells them just wait until the Great Pumpkin comes. Cause he IS coming because Linus knows what he’s talking about and what he’s doing. (Linus if I were you, I’d marry this girl. She is going HARD for you!). But then when they’re gone, she’s like “Alright where is he?” Linus assures her he’ll be there. She says he better be because he’s ruining her reputation and plus they’re missing out.

At the party, Lucy demonstrates how bobbing for apples is done. Schroder tells her she ought to be good at it she has the perfect mouth for it. She’s not amused. When she leans down, she gets a kiss from Snoopy. Sally says if anyone had told her she’d be sitting in a pumpkin patch on Halloween night she’d have thought they were crazy. Linus says but when the Great Pumpkin comes they’ll be first to see him. Linus hears a noise and gets all hyper and starts screaming he’s there. Something does start to rise but it’s just Snoopy. Linus faints.

When he comes to its clear he didn’t see Snoopy because he asks what happened and did he leave them any toys or candy. Sally goes SMACK OFF and starts screaming at Linus how he keep her up all night for a beagle. She says Halloween is over and it’s all his fault. Lol She even threatens to sue him (which is a little drastic). She says she was a fool and she could have had candy apples, and cookies, and gum and all kinds of things but she had to listen to him. She calls him and block head and storms off. (UH SALLY ITS CALLED WALMART)

Linus is still calling out to her and telling her if the Great Pumpkin comes he’ll still come. Then he notices his slip up and says when. He says there’s no fury like a woman who missed out on trick or treats. At 2 am, Linus is still out in the pumpkin patch and he is freezing cold and Lucy takes pity on him and comes to get him and put him to bed.

Charlie Brown vents to Linus how another Halloween has come and gone and how all he got is a bag full of rocks. Charlie Brown says he heard he spend the night in the pumpkin patch and the great pumpkin left him hanging. Linus says nope. Charlie Brown says don’t take it too hard. He’s done a lot of stupid things in his life too. Linus loses his mind and says just wait until next year . He’ll be sitting there in that pumpkin patch and he’ll find one that’s real sincere. Charlie Brown says “Good grief”!

My Thoughts:
It's interesting how you think of things you hadn't thought of years later. Could the Pumpkin King be Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Wouldn't that fit so perfectly? Even though this was a simple story (and a classic one that’s showed every Halloween) this one now that I'm an adult touched my heart because I know what it's like to believe in something that makes you look crazy to everyone else around you. And have such a strong belief in it that you keep on believing.

I also know what it's like to wait on something and wait and wait and wait for it to manifest. And you don't know but you know in your heart it'll come. So I know what it's like to be Linus.

At first I admired Sally for sticking up for Linus and passing up the chance to do something that was important to her to be there for him. But instead of following through and even when it doesn't happen saying something like. That's ok. He'll come next time. She goes off on him and gets mad. (sighing)

Have you seen stores around Halloween? Ailes and aisles of candy! That same candy will probably be there the next day as a matter of fact. Yes! I know it's not the same as trick or treating and getting it free but it's CANDY!

And then what was up with everyone giving Charlie Brown rocks?! Charlie Brown isn't a bad character at all. But yet he gets done the worse in this whole series. Could they not just have given him some candy in his bag? Just HORRIBLE!

It kind of makes me mad when I think about it because just because YOU don't see something yourself or believe in what someone else believes in that doesn't give you the right to make the person feel crazy and try to shame them for their personal belief. I'm not saying lie to Linus but I just wish (and would have liked to see) when he fell asleep waiting in that cold pumpkin patch (cause it's October) to have brought a big sack full of candy and left it besides him. That would have been a great ending to the story.

RATING: 8 This will ALWAYS be a Halloween staple!

Everyone it seems knows this story. But reading the story or watching the DVD has kind of become a tradition in of itself.I picked this up a few days ago from the public library, I was a little surprised at the length seeing as how it is a children's book. But I am sure for lots of parents it's a great fun read to tell their kids before they go out for Halloween night. Even live the librarians was jealous that I got a book before he did when I checked out.
