Entertaining read by a former steeplechase jockey, Sean Clancy, in diary form of all the happenings in the day of the life of a jockey during the Saratoga Racing meet. Clancy really gives you a feel of the atmosphere in Saratoga: the happenings downtown, the morning work-outs, the struggle of keeping weight off for a jockey and the subsequent use of the sauna to take excess weight off, the highs and lows of racing, trips to the hospital, just all the people and horses that make Saratoga unique.
I picked this up because it was on clearance BUT about Saratoga so it had to be good, right? It was okay. This guy's tone kind of gets to me. He tries to be conversational but he tries too hard. And he thinks a little too much of himself. But it's about Saratoga, one of my favorite places, so what can you do? Something to read once.
