One cannot help but chuckle throughout this, clever, delightful story...Especially written for that daring little boy toddling around!

Parents and family members will quickly relate to the antics of this story on how a child's imagination seems so real!

The wording was great! Illustrations done by Nadir Saddiqui, perfectly matched the heart of the story.

I highly recommend this to parents, grandparents, pre-school and early elementary teachers. It is also great for early readers and Summer Reading Programs.

I heartily review and rate this book with a Five Stars rating.

This is a delightful story that will enchant its young, and possibly, older readers. In this book, we meet Sal, a very young baby who comes from a long line of guards. His job is to make sure that no dragons enter his home. He does this by constantly patrolling the house; emptying laundry baskets, crawling under tables and preparing his soldiers; a mixed bag of teddy bears. All goes well until one day Sal is astonished to see his mother wrangling a dragon in the living room.

I think young readers will certainly enjoy reading this book either to themselves or have it read to them. The true meaning of Sal’s role as baby guard will not be lost on them. As well, the illustrations are organic and reflect the humour of the story very well.

I can highly recommend this story for children of any age. It is beautifully written and I think they will certainly appreciate the humour in the story. This is a definitely a five star book for me!

I received this book for free through Goodreads Firstreads. I thought this book was precious. My son was afraid of vacuum cleaners for a long time. However, when it was turned off and put away he would go knock it over or poke at it. This will be so much fun to read to him and when he's old enough to laugh about it, we will laugh about how he used to be Captain of the Baby Guards.

I would like to thank Jennifer Reinoehl for sending me 'Sal, Captain of the Baby Guards,' which I won in the Goodreads Giveaways.
My 3 yr old grandson loved this story, and had great fun in trying to find the dragons. I would recommend this book to anyone who has young children.

Adorable story

This story is about a baby who believes he must protect his home from dragons. it is a really cute story showing children the importance of training in the form of play and courage to slay their own dragons.

Excellent! Jennifer Reinoehl can get into the heads of children and tell the story from a child's perspective. Very difficult to do.

A nice children's book. The language is a bit challenging for the younger ones.

This is a delightful, quirky and unique book. The imagination runs wild, and what kid doesn't like imaginary play about dragons?

The prose is well done, with some minor exceptions which I'll address in a moment. The artwork itself is playful and well-composed, again subject to sizing issues I'll mention soon as well.

Children usually read stories about other children at their age level or older than they. As such, since the boy in the story seems about age three to five, I'll guess the book would be enjoyed by children aged two to eight, as their parents would read it to them. Thus, I will base my evaluation on the premise the book is to be read by parents to children aged two to eight, at their level of understanding.

As for the writing, like I said, well done. A few exceptions:

Some of the writing consist of phrases understood by adults, but not by young children, i.e. "mass of tickling laughter," "motionless," "lining up... for inspection," and "sweat began to bead up on his forehead." Also, children don't usually have the maturity to sweat out of fear. If they're nervous, they fidget, or run away, but usually don't sweat.

As for the artwork, I like it. The artwork should be bigger, as should be the words. I imagine it was formatted for electronic book version. The art should be more enlarged to fit its own page, and the words removed and enlarged to fit the opposite page. This is how books for very young children are usually structured, or with more large illustrations, with the same number of words, but in only three or four lines that fit easily as large size font underneath large illustrations. If words and illustrations go together on the same page, then usually there is a coloured background to ensure that the words are aesthetically joined to the illustrations. But here in this book, they seem to be too detached.

All in all, a delightful book. I have given this book an additional star on Amazon to reflect the different rating system.
