I have finally finished this book and feel as though I should start from the beginning again.

Edsel appeared to have thought he needed to publish every fact he uncovered but, no doubt, he uncovered much more. As a reader, I felt overwhelmed and could not always remember the names, conditions, and specific goals of each monuments hero. Fortunately, the author listed the main characters in the front of the book and the lesser characters in an appendix. That along with chapter maps was essential to tracking the story.

What a story! The volume of treasure and bizarre hiding places was mind-boggling. Edsel attempts to capture some of the feeling of soldiers as they discover the troves -- it defied my imagination. I was impressed by their immediate recognition of masses of work.

The story that shores up the other stories is that of Rose Valland who put her life on the line repeatedly and refused to give up her story until she found someone worth trusting.

I am so pleased Edsel included an aftermath. After living with these characters through this long, involved, and intricate story, it was a relief to get the rest of the story.

Love true stories. Great read of little known part of WWII. I'm impressed with the modesty and dedication of these unsung heroes of the Greatest Generation.

Great story, OK book. Add rampant art theft and destruction to the list of Nazi Crimes. What the Monuments Men did to track and find some of the most well known art in human history is nothing short of astounding. Unfortunately, the book seemed to track a little too closely to the chaos of war and was often somewhat difficult to follow. Still overall a good book.

It wasn't an easy read. A lot of documentation, names to remember and extra(!) information - but then it didn't purport to be the book of the (spurious) film. In reality it's an amazing episode in history that was almost inexplicably overlooked.

The story is amazing and deserves all the stars but the writing a bit repetitive so I'm giving the book 4 stars. I strongly recommend reading this book.

This was an interesting book and gave much more detail than the recently released movie.
