A shipwrecked sailor discovers the island he has landed on is not as deserted as he thought. A lone survivor describes an extraterrestrial invasion surprising in its circumstance. A woman wakes up to find a stranger in her bed, twins compete for a woman's affection, and a vessel trapped in the Antarctic ice becomes a site of dread and desperation. In the tradition of literary fantasists like Jorge Luis Borges and Italo Calvino, Tony Wolk delivers a feast of stories that challenge our assumptions about history, reality, and what stories reveals about their tellers. A collection decades in the making, The Parable of You is the work of a writer able to move from the cosmic to the personal in the space of a few deft sentences, with surprising and moving results.
I would be lying if I were to say that I am not biased in favor of Tony Wolk. He’s a gentle, warm and beautiful man. With a beard like no other. Something he has had long before it was fashionable here in Portland. He loves Philip K Dick, more than I do. Which is saying something. I think he is a talented writer. I remember him always at his typewriter when I was just 19 and spending time at the house with him and Lindsay. I consider myself lucky for every moment I was there. I wish I could talk to him as an adult. I cannot wait to read this book. Is it fair that I read it five stars without reading it yet? I think it just might be. Because that’s how confident I am in the man..
