19世紀末から20世紀の初頭にかけて活躍したオーストリアの詩人であり作家であったライナー・マリア・リルケの短編戯曲。森鴎外がドイツ語から日本語へ翻訳した。主人公である画家は、友人の結婚パーティで、令嬢ヘレエネと出会い意気投合。すぐに、画家の家に遊びにくる。すると、家の掃除などをしてくれているマッシャと鉢合わせ。実は、久しぶり絵を描こうと、マッシャにモデルをしてくれと頼んでいたのだ。しかし、ヘレエネに夢中な画家にはマッシャが目に入らない。前日に部屋の掃除などをしてくれていたことにも気づいていない。しかし、ヘレエネにすべてき気づきがかを諭す。そこではじめて、画家はマッシャと対峙するのであった。

He also wrote more than four hundred poems in French, dedicated to the canton of Valais in Switzerland, his homeland of choice.
