This is an interesting books that collects all the past interviews with Mr. Wu Si, an Editor at a reformist magazine Yan Huang Chun Qiu. Although the book separate into several different chapters, it mainly focus on Mr. Wu’s recent proposed theories of “Hidden Rules” and “Blood Payments” as a new perspective to interpret Chinese history and culture and its implication to modern Chinese society. This book is a concise summary on his previous successful non-academic history books “Hidden Rules” and “Blood Payments” and it follows reader friendly writing style. As a journalist and editor, Mr. Wu is not a professional trained historian, and his method of history-telling, borrowing concepts and ideas from economic and evolution theory is not new brainer for western academics. The theory of blood payments and hidden rules are refreshing for readers and draw lively conversations on whether China could avoid the history lessons from the past in heading to modern civilized society. It is important to notice that this is not an academic paper and there are many un-stated assumptions and context for Mr. Wu’s analysis and theory. Misunderstanding would inevitable if those assumptions and contexts are neglected.
