This short and practical handbook is dedicated to the idea that there is a set of highly effective strategies and tactics that chief information officers (CIOs) and other IT professionals can use to significantly increase the effectiveness of their own work and the competitiveness and profitability of their companies.
Even though information technology itself is changing rapidly, these strategies and tactics transcend any particular technology, and they remain highly relevant over time. See the seven strategic guidelines for designing application systems and the six tactical principles for running projects. Understand how to create an agile IT organization using three "agility loops" with supporting processes. Useful techniques such as the OODA Loop, Six Sigma, and a Define - Design - Build development model are explained. Frequent diagrams and case studies are used to illustrate key points throughout the book.
NOTES FROM THE AUTHOR I use these techniques to find elegant solutions to complex problems and to mentor and train teams in agile development. The material presented here has been field tested and refined over many years in corporate and consulting environments. It has greatly assisted the evolution of my career from developer to project manager and finally IT Director and CIO. I spent six years as CIO of a national distribution organization where I and my staff used these strategies and tactics to design and roll out a suite of supply chain and e-business systems that transformed the company's operations and revenue model. For this work I won the CIO 100 Award twice for boldness and resourcefulness, the InformationWeek 500 Award for innovation, and the Computerworld Premier 100 Award for career achievement.
I write for several IT industry magazines and websites. I earned my MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, and have written and co-authored several other books including Doing Business in the What Every Business Needs to Know about Cloud Computing, and Essentials of Supply Chain Management, 3rd Edition.
