4am in Las Vegas

Michelle Jackson first came to us (readers) when she wrote Two Days in Biarritz and after reading it I knew we had a special writer on our hands. A person who had the ability to write about a place and bring her readers straight into the story, with each book she has written she has brought us to Biarritz, New York, Havana and now Las Vegas. When you read these books you can tell instantly that the research has been done, she has been there made her own memories and then she has come back to share these beautiful cities with us. The special thing about these books is not only the way that they have been written but the fact that the culture of each city has been brought to the forefront.
In each of her books Michelle has tackled issues such as abuse, betrayal and now Alzheimer’s, a topic that sadly many are familiar with. When reading 4am in Las Vegas a change in writing was noticed immediately, the way her writing has grown and expanded is beautiful to watch. The feeling that she was putting even more of herself into this story was apparent. Not saying that Michelle had used real life experiences but that she had given more of herself to her readers. Considering that she tends to give so much of herself already this was an extraordinary discovery.
4am in Las Vegas follows the lives of eight different characters that are all brought to Las Vegas in search of something. When these lives intertwine in many different ways we discover some hidden truths.
Vicky who came to Las Vegas to marry her fiancé Frank probably has the worst time of all, not only does her daughter disappear with her wedding planners son but she realises that Frank has been hiding some very interesting secrets from her. Will she ever find her daughter and will Frank tell her the truth?
Suzanne is a sweetheart who lives in Dublin taking care of her mother who has Alzheimer’s. The past few years she has drastically changed her life in order to be a carer and she has lost a huge part of herself in the process. When her best friend Eddie suggests a little trip to Las Vegas so she can have a well deserved break Suzanne is a little more than apprehensive about the whole idea. How could she possibly leave her mother and jet off to Vegas on a holiday? There is however the lovely Ronan, an old flame who has just re-connected with her that helps sway her opinion when she learns he will be in Las Vegas for business. In the wonderful setting of the City of Lights, we see these characters stories unfold. Some lives are shattered while others are put back together.
After reluctantly reaching the end of best-selling author Michelle Jackson’s fourth book I have been inspired to go back and re-read the others. I am doing so not only to fill in the time until book number five comes along, but also because reading her latest book reminded me how much the other stories had made an impact on me.

It was an easy read and enjoyable , but I thought at the beginning you were introduced to too many characters to get a picture of them in your head. It covered a good few topics and kept your interest.

A good fast paced story. I read it on Halloween to keep me in the spirit of the holiday :D This was the first Michelle Jackson book I have read. The story is set in Las Vegas, and the descriptions were excellent, I really felt like I was there with the characters. There were quite a few main characters with two plots intertwining, but I personally didn't feel connected with the characters for some reason, maybe there were just too many to get a real feel for any of them. I will be reading more from this author though.

Brilliantly written with fantastic descriptions of Las Vegas. I had always pictured it as one road of lights, now know that’s the strip, but also that there is so much more to Vegas. Michelle takes the reader on so many journeys with the characters; this book almost doubles up as a traveller’s guide.

Nothing too special. The book deals with topics such as gambling, alzheimers and pressure from family.
Jackson did her research to the book as we dwell into Native American territory and she manages to keep it respectful.

The only characters that I really enjoyed were Suzanne and Ronan and their arc.
