Serapion of Thmuis

"Serapion was Bishop of Thmuis in the Nile delta from ca. 339 and died after 360 AD. A close friend and protégé of St Athanasius, he was in his early life a monk and had been a companion of St Antony who had bequeathed one of his two sheepskin cloaks to him. He was sent by Athanasius on a difficult mission to the Emperor Constantius II and had addressed to him a series of letters on the divinity of the Holy Ghost. Serapion composed some literary works (including a treatise against the Manichees) and was probably responsible for compiling the sacramentary which bears his name."

A short book about the Ethiopian saint Abba Moses.

I do not regret reading this, because I know next to nothing about the Orthodox saints and obscure early church fathers, but I did not learn much from this book. I think I expected a thorough biography and collected theological insights. But it was a few brief and repetitive vignettes cobbled together from ancient sources. The sources are not to be blamed for their briefness or repetitiveness. Clearly that was all the documentation there was to be had. Probably not the best introduction to early saints and church fathers, but it is very short, so worth looking at I suppose.

Definitely my patron saint. Violent criminal who led a gang of 70 bandits and later became leader of the monastery he joined while hiding from a crime. He led an ascetic life and died in old age defending the monastery from thieves seeking to rob it, an act he once partook in. His story gave me the motivation to become a catechumen in Greek Orthodoxy. If even a violent leader of a band of thieves could become a saint, a former arrogant lifelong atheist can as well ☦️

"He became a fighter, whom the demons feared, he stood upon the rock, a type of the cross."

History has always been one of favorite subjects. So to read about “Moses The Black” another known name of his, I am excited.

This is a nice little introduction into one of the early church saints. Saint Abba Moses' journey from bridgandry to sainthood is remarkable and inspiring. While many details are not known about this saint, this intro gives you a glimpse into his life and conversion.

The life of saint Moses is a proof that no matter how far away our life is from God, there is hope of returning to God and falling in love with Christ. Whether thieves or murderers...
