I have rated this book five stars not because of any literary merit; but rather, the thorough detail merged with just the right amount of dry sass. The recording is only 42 minutes in length, so it's perfect for a commute. The work contains beautiful gems of phraseology that allow the reader (or listener) to glimpse at the correspondence of 1912. I now know the basics of the art of making a proper rock garden, and not a "rockery."
"Shun artificial rocks like the plague."
"Planting is not the end, it is only the beginning of planting."
"Certain plants, like certain friends, you enjoy having for a visit but do not care to see remain forever and a day."
