His works are highly considered and have won important awards such as the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française in 1967 for Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique. and the Prix Goncourt for Le Roi des aulnes in 1970. His works dwell on the fantastic, his inspirations including traditional German culture, Catholicism, and the philosophies of Gaston Bachelard. He lived in Choisel and was a member of the Académie Goncourt. His autobiography has been translated and published as The Wind Spirit (Beacon Press, 1988).

Chi conosce e ama Tournier vi troverà alcuni dei suoi temi classici. Libro perfetto per bambini i ragazzini che giocano a scacchi.

Di come si sfidano Fortuna e Ragione
Una breve novella filosofica, ottimamente ambientata ai tempi della Guerra dei Cent'anni in cui Tournier materializza lo sgomento del fedele seguace della programmazione razionale del reale che si vede sconfitto più volte dal Caso cinico e baro. Davvero abile il metodo usato dall'autore francese che presenta una (anzi, due!) partita a Scacchi dove la vittoria è semplicemente determinata da chi ha la fortuna di avere i pezzi neri!
