"Hunting with the newly invented firearms was problematic animals were reluctant to stand in front of cannons long enough to be converted to SPAM. In response to complaints of supermarket butchers everywhere, the "hand-gonne" was invented. Simply a downsized cannon mounted on a pole, the hand-gonne struggled for popularity mainly because no one knew how to pronounce the word gonne."
Go to any shooting range and observe what happens when folks show up without knowing the first thing about their new gun. The Rookie's Guide to Guns and Shooting, Handgun Edition will teach you the basics of visiting ranges and gun stores and help you with basic shooting instruction.
"Water tends to run downhill. Asparagus tends to find it way from kids' plates to the dog under the table. And Michael Moore's muffin top tends to hang around his knees. The point is, all things tend to gravitate towards their natural state. And that's where natural point of aim comes in. Natural point of aim simply means assuming the stance and position where your body naturally wants to point the gun."
The editors at MyGunCulture.com have painstakingly documented successes and failures we've seen over the years. We've listened to so many gun show huckster sales pitches that the late Billy Mays would be impressed. And the result? "The Rookie's Guide to Guns and Shooting, Handgun Edition."
"Not too long ago, a visit to a local gun store would more than likely involve meeting Clem, Bodean, and Clem's other brother Clem. Fortunately, those days are mostly behind us. Many gun stores have gone full-auto retail and implemented 20th century customer-centric ideas like hiring helpful sales staff, designing functional and attractive showrooms and running water."
Loaded with pictures and comedic illustrations, this book will tell you just about everything you need to know to get started with the shooting sports. We also address mysterious gun terminology and those shooting myths that spread like the flu on a budget cruise ship.
"If someone tells you about the knockdown power of a given cartridge, immediately run to the nearest library and ask to borrow a copy of Physics For Dummies. In it, you might find mention of a guy named Isaac Newton. While his brother Wayne was busy developing a fine singing career in Las Vegas, Isaac focused on important issues related to motion of objects. For example, if you buy the biggest gangsta pistol on the market, will it knock you over backwards when you fire it?"

Disclaimer: I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway on the premise that I would review it.
This is one of a series of “Insanely Practical Guides” on firearms and related matters. This volume primarily focuses on handguns, with brief sections on longer guns. My star rating needs a little explanation. For the information about guns and shooting, I'd rate it four stars. But there are issues that drastically lower the rating overall.
The parts of the book that are directly about guns, gun-related accessories and shooting are excellent. A strong emphasis is placed on safety and proper care for your weapons. From my experience with firearms, all important areas are covered well
Unfortunately, the author has really obvious political beliefs, and thinks he is much funnier than he actually is. There are many supposed jokes that are cheap jabs at a handful of politicians, bad puns and one or two jokes that were funny the first time but rapidly wear thin.
As a result, the sections on the history of firearms and the Second Amendment are nigh-useless. The latter is told as a “parable” that reduces the issue to gibberish. The book would have been much better served by a sober discussion of Second Amendment issues and why some people have legitimate reasons to consider gun control a good thing.
The author also heavily shills for the National Rifle Association, dismissing their leadership’s shady tactics with “If you have a disagreement whether your spouse drank the last bit of apple juice, do you leave them forever?” Mind, your local chapter of the NRA is probably good folks that aren’t fanatically opposed to sane legal restrictions on firearms, but the national leadership is not so likable.
The heavy jabs at current politicians and pop culture references make it likely that this book will become swiftly dated, and opaque to people outside the United States. It’s unlikely to convince someone who’s on the fence about gun ownership that such would be a good idea.
There are plenty of illustrations, the ones of guns and gun accessories are helpful, the “cartoons” fall flat. There are also several typos, including apostrophe abuse.
I’d recommend for future editions, if any, that the politics and “humor” be cut back considerably in favor of more solid information, which is what the book does best.
I liked this book. An extremely simple and easy to read book that is truly written for an individual that is going to handle a handgun for the first time. This book hits its target audience, the rookie, perfectly. Humor is thick throughout this book which at times seemed to detracted from some very important information, but softened some topics as to not intimidate those that were being introduced to handguns. Minus some of the extra bits of humor this book is a nice intro for a reader that knows nothing about guns and more specifically handguns. I won this book through the Goodreads giveaway program. What a great program! I thank all who made this book available through this program and the fact that it is now part of my library.
This book does a good job on getting the safety tips and information on buying handguns and accessory. The section on gun history was a bit confusing with the humor that was used making it hard to distinguish between fact and humor. There are good tips on shooting and practice. I would recommend this book to gun owners of any experience. It has good points.
This book covers the basics of choosing, shootings, and storing handguns very well for a raw beginner. There is nothing new here for experienced shooters, but that's not the target audience. It is written with humor, but the humor is 80% snark and will probably be lost on the target audience and may even be found offensive by some.
A totally enjoyable read with great points of interest. Many facts and insights into the shooting arena. Has a lot of web links to interesting and informative sites. I enjoyed the book.
Well, I'm a rookie, so this was aimed at me. Good, solid information, delivered with plenty of humor (which sometimes threatens to overpower the factual info).
Other than a few grammatical errors and typos, this book was fabulous! It had some interesting points, tons of humor, and there was something for even avid gun-owners to learn and/or think about!
