Mel and Sam are two perfectly normal young adult. The have their school, homework and magic shows. They also, occasionally, go on missions for MI21, a secret branch of the British Intelligence Agency. They are normal saved for the being sort-of agents. It actually couldn’t be helped when Mel’s Uncle Jack happened to be the head of operations for MI21. Things only went from bad to worse when Mel and Sam were asked to keep a computer disc safe. In short few days Mel and Sam were; dangled from a moving helicopter, found themselves lying in a ditch and to top it all of, involve in a shot out of a sort orchestrated by Mad Skuda Skunk; an over the top, dramatic and vindictive leader (one third owner) of the Skunk Empire.
I must say, I went in without any expectation given it was a children’s book. I thought it would be a cute book, little did I know, it could probably give Alex Rider a run for his money in terms of story telling (I read a chapter of Stormbreaker). It was funny and sweet and not too much. I would say the children were portrayed a little too smart, then again, I can name at least a handful kids smarter than me. It was a nice read and though a bit confusing at the end with a couple of throwbacks, the author did manage to redeem himself along the way.
I wouldn’t say the book was perfect. It was a far cry from it. It was cute and fun. But, a disc? I remembered being a teenager in 2006 (the year the book was published) and I had a nice USB and I even had an external hard drive. I honestly though MI21 would have been a lot more advance than me. And honestly Uncle Jack, why on earth are you endangering your niece and her friend in the first place? Doesn’t he have a lot of agents at his disposal? Or he could have just leave an encoded message saying that they should drop the disc in the first place. I honestly have no idea how he managed to gain that position of his with his lack of preparation and back-up plans.
