Nobuyuki Fukumoto (福本伸行Fukumoto Nobuyuki) is a Japanese manga artist well known throughout the Far East for his unique and original gambling ideas, deep psychological analysis of characters and distinct artstyle. Yakuza and gambling are recurring themes in his manga. In English speaking countries, he is known best as the author of Akagi, a mahjong-related manga. In 1998, he won the Kodansha Manga Award for Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji. An onomatopoeia "zawa" (ざわ…), meaning an uneasy atmosphere, appears frequently in his comics and is considered Fukumoto's trademark. In June 2010, he visited Finland as a guest of honor for Desucon.
god damn this comic cooks! i was a little worried when i started it, thinking that all the gambling minutia would bore me, not to mention the repetitive graphics... but guess what jack, i was wrong BIG TIME! i really lost my shirt on that bet! ha ha, but to get serious, the simple-ass drawings are super effective, and in fact there is some real skill and taste to the man's artwork lurking beneath the almost "beano"-esque surface. then there's the fuckin' dialogue, which reaches near dostoyevskyan heights (or depths?) of anguish in the last few volumes. here and there, though, it can tend to get a bit too drawn out, i will say (a critique i'd also lob at dostoyevsky).
