水彩とペンで描かれるイラストが暖かい、スーザン・バーレイのデビュー作。イギリスでは最もなじみの深い動物のひとつであるアナグマを主人公にした本書は、「身近な人を失った悲しみを、どう乗り越えていくのか」ということをテーマにした絵本。 賢くて、いつもみんなに頼りにされているアナグマだが、冬が来る前に「長いトンネルの　むこうに行くよ　さようなら　アナグマより」という手紙を残して死んでしまった。悲しみにくれる森の動物たちは、それぞれがアナグマとの思い出を語り合ううちに、彼が宝物となるような知恵や工夫を残してくれたことに気付いていく。そして、春が来る頃には、アナグマのことは楽しい思い出へと変わっていった。

たかが子ども向けの絵本とあなどるなかれ。子どもたちに「死」について考えるチャンスを与え、すでに「死」を理解する大人にも静かで深い感動をもたらす。親しい人とのお別れを経験した方に、心を込めて贈りたくなる。（小山由絵）

悲しくも嬉しくも話です。アナグマさんはこの community's father figure なので、亡くなった後、みんなが悲しくなりました。でも、アナグマさんによく思い出して、みんなの心は話に感動して、ゆっくりゆっくりと幸せになりました。
The way everyone told stories about him after he passed and, with time, took the good memories and lessons and passed them on without sadness reminded me of what my family did after my father's funeral. This story was very bittersweet to read.
