I can’t give less than 5 stars to a Veggie Tales book. Sweet, cute and uplifting. I like how Bob the Tomato figures out how to make the guilty party show themselves! I also liked the footsteps left behind and the dogs. Cute little story that I think a beginner reader would enjoy. Definitely recommended!

Veggie Tales, Veggie Tales, Veggie Tales... when a veggie tale book is shared... well we all have to sing. So once again Sheerluck Holmes and Bobby Watson are called in to solve the case. Through foggy London streets, they arrive at the Pizza Place and there are many who appear to be guilty in hurting the feelings of Sniffy. With some quick thinking, Bobby Watson turns out the lights...

Well I do not spoil any book's ending, but I will say that the characters are delightful... the setting provides much to talk about once you've read the tale... and as in every Veggie Tale the moral is "spot on" for all of our younger listeners. The little miss in our home listened, then wanted it read again, and of course said, "Read it again, read it again." Finally, she asked, "Why would they hurt Sniffy's feelings?" Awe and there is the teachable moment that always brings out the best of our Veggie Tale friends.

Enjoy this great new opportunity for family time, fun, and Veggie Tale singing,

I have a first grader now and part of his homework is to read for twenty minutes each night. It doesn't sound like a long time but for someone just learning and having to sound out many of the words; it is! That's why it's been really important to me to find books that are not only at his level; they also hold his interest!

From the time they started watching TV as toddlers, my kids have loved the Veggie Tales DVD's. The I Can Read books from Zonderkidz starring their beloved characters is the perfect way to get Reed reading something he actually cares about. We started with Sheerlock Holmes and The Case of the Missing Friend, which is a Step 1 in the I Can Read books.

For those of you that aren't familiar with I Can Read, it's a great way to know before having to screen the book what reading level the book is at. There are five levels designed with every reader in mind:

My First: Ideal for sharing with emergent readers
Step 1: Simple sentences for eager new readers
Step 2: High-Interest stories for developing readers
Step 3: Complex plots for confident readers
Step 4: The perfect bridge to chapter books
As you can tell from the title, this one involves a bit of a mystery! I love how creative the Veggie Tale books are in using real people and changing their names to make them Veggie Tale characters.

When Sniffy goes missing it's a case for Sheerluck Holmes and the gang and they set out to figure out where he could be but the more important question ends up being, WHY he disappeared!

There was a great lesson in this, as there always is, on being kind and careful not to hurt others feelings. For a first grader, this is a highly appropriate topic. Reed is a sensitive little soul and easily gets his feelings hurt. It's important for him to see both sides and that people don't always to intend to be hurtful, but even when they do he needs to be gracious and forgiving.

Sheerluck Holmes and The Case of the Missing Friend is a great addition to our Step 1 I Can Read collection and will get lots of use since Reed can read it himself and it meets our daily reading requirements. I like the repeated lesson that will really hit home with him!

About the Book:

A Lesson on the Golden Rule

In the newest addition to the VeggieTales I Can Read series, Sheerluck Holmes and the Case of the Missing Friend, our Veggie friend Sniffy’s feelings are hurt, and he disappears from the Pizza Place. His friends are worried and ask Sheerluck and Dr. Watson for help finding him. Will they find Sniffy before the hounds of Baker Street do? And will Sniffy ever forgive his friends for treating him poorly?

Throughout her career, Karen Poth has held various positions in the Children's Entertainment Industry including Vice President of Design at Big Idea/VeggieTales, Product Developer at Walt Disney World, CCO of SpringSprang Studio, and Kid's Innovation Strategist at Hallmark Cards. She holds a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri. She lives with her husband and seven-year-old son in Lenexa, KS.

My Review:

Sheerluck Holmes and Dr. Watson to the rescue, as the friends of Sniffy struggle to find out what has happened to their friend. It turns out the friends had hurt Sniffy's feelings, and then he ran away. Soon they realized the friends knew that they had done their friend wrong and needed to find him and fix all of this because they feared for his safety. As soon as they looked into the darkness and the fog, they had to hurry before the hounds got to him.

They found their friend and so did the hounds of Baker Street. They asked for Sniffy's forgiveness and of course he forgave them. And all the friends decide to go to Pizza Place for a nice, big piece of cake. The lesson here was to all be kind to others, no matter the situation or cause. It is a hard lesson to learn sometimes, but we need to always be kind to our friends and neighbors.

This was a cute little book. Sniffy has gone missing and there are many suspects, but who hurt his feelings? Sheerluck and Bobby must discover that and find Sniffy before the dogs. Sniffy is alone and sad at how his friends treated him.
I read this with my 6 year old son who loves Veggie Tales. He really enjoyed reading it and learning the new words through the book. It was nice that it did give him some new, challenging words and that I knew it would have a good message. He really wasn't that impressed with the story itself but there was a good message to it.
It was a 3/5 for us. My son had fun with reading it, but wasn't engrossed in the story, just trying to learn the new words.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book (via BookLook). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

I was so thrilled to be able to share this wonderful story with my 3 year old son. He absolutely loved the wonderful illustrations and enjoyed getting to see some of his favorite Veggie Tales characters in a brand new story! He laughed and said “Bob the Tomato has a mustache!!!” He thought that was just hilarious!
I loved the overall message of the story- that we should treat others with kindness, no matter what. This was a really creative way to get this point across to early readers. The pages were short, which I love, because it’s hard to keep a toddlers attention for too long. My son sat attentively through the entire story.
This book is so colorful and fun and the perfect bedtime story for little ones!!! Highly recommend!
