It’s the last thing Rob Thornton, up and coming Manchester barrister with a reputation for prosecuting rapists and wife beaters, expects. An early morning knock on the door bringing a warrant for his arrest…on a charge of rape. Within days the mysterious Angelita Covas retracts her accusation, and disappears. Haunted by her disappearance Rob embarks on a mission to find her, and to clear his name. The trail leads to London where Rob is threatened at knife point; warned off in Belgravia; kidnapped and threatened. Worse is yet to come. A series of rhyming text messages arrive, each one foretelling the death of someone connected to him. Rob has a sinister Secret Santa, and the answer lies in subterranean tunnels deep beneath City of Manchester, where Rob comes face to face with Angelita, the truth, and his nemesis. One of them must die; the choice is his!
This may be a DCI Caton book, but in a refreshing twist, he plays a minor role in the story. The focus being on Rob and the chance encounter that sets off a chain reaction of harrowing events for him.
I enjoyed the story and feel that changing the protagonist really worked and kept the series fresh. X
A different approach to the Tom Caton stories, this time telling the story of a victim's from his perspective, rather than the week established 'police procedure' of previous novels. It was an interesting story with a few twists, though the climax felt a little overly melodramatic. Although not central to this yarn, the Caton team came across very unsympathetically. This was a good observation: whilst the police teams do a great job most of the time, and in crime novels they usually 'get their man', in real life, they are frequently the subject of suspicion and considered to be hard, one dimensional characters. This certainly came across in this book, being described from the non-police perspective. Well worth the read, and it has now for me ready for a trip back to the more traditional police detection type story.
Another good but different story in the series. DCI Cat on does not feature much as it is based around the main character. Lots of twists and turns and an unexpected ending.
Didn't feel this fitted the remit to be in the DCI canton series, plot a little unbelievable, but still a good read. Overall a disappointment as expected to read about the team!
I love DCI Tom Canton books, but he went missing in this book. Rob Thornton was too good a man to be a lawyer. But overall enjoyed the book with twists and turns.
Very interesting story with lots of twists and turns. Kept you reading to see who was the villain he did not come to light till the last few chapter's.
First of all, Tom Caton hardly appears in this book, so I don't know why it's listed as being in his series. Although I liked some of the plot twists, the entire premise didn't strike me as believable. I've liked the other books in the series, which I'm reading out of order, but not this one.
