Igneous Range: A California Story

Rate this book
John Muir named it the Range of Light, appropriately enough, but the Sierra Nevada is much more than blue skies and alpenglow. It is a range of fire, from its plutonic core to its smattering of lava flows, the precarious equilibrium of its igneous ecology, and its precarious kinship with an igneous species.

Cindy Adroushan is deeply afraid of fire, but what may seem to be a maladaptive phobia to others is just extraordinary perceptiveness. Yet Cindy’s life remains a life of fear, so she must either continue in fear or resolve to confront the dragon.

About the author

Kaweah

10 books1 follower
Kaweah was born in LA, baptized in the Deep South, harvested in the Great Valley, and charred in the Sierra Nevada. By age 8 he'd lived in a dozen towns and been visited by two fire departments. At age 12 he hit .400, caught a game with the measles, rode his bike across the Valley, and even stopped wetting the bed. At 13 he broke into an Israeli army camp and ran the South African border in a rainstorm. At 15 he accepted his mission from Allah. At 16 he discovered wilderness. Later, he went to Israel and masqueraded as a security guard.

He somehow received a BS in math from the University of South Carolina and an MS in engineering from Cal State University.

Today he's a middling father of two great kids and a passing husband of one terrific wife. He resides in Silicon Valley, where he walks the dog and develops software. He writes whenever he can’t fight the urge.

So far he's stepped over four rattlesnakes.

I think Igneous Range is the best thing since the invention of toilet paper, but then I'm the author, so I'll give it a neutral three stars.

But you want to know more. Of course you do.

The book is a portrait (of sorts) of the Sierra Nevada (mountains of California) in prose, framed as a novel. The story itself features several teenagers from the San Joaquin Valley back in the 1980s, teenagers who find themselves getting mixed up with the wrong influences, like this mountain range, an "igneous range" that really just wants to burn. As I'm sure you know, sometimes when the land really wants something, somebody comes along who listens to the land and helps it to get what it wants.

What? Don't believe me? Don't just take my word for it; read the book.

Or don't. It ain't for everybody.

Good Backpacking book

Some books you read in a day, some books like this one, you may prefer to put down and pick up when you need it.

Much of the charm of this book is the description of the day to day trivia of life in the locales the characters inhabit. Some of these I personally am very familiar with and others have never encountered. Being the curious type it was enjoyable to look places up on maps as I read and to research flora and fauna that was mentioned.

If you are a fan of California History and literature take a look at this. I will admit that I am only halfway through this book but felt compelled to leave this review because it has reminded me that there is more than one way to enjoy a book.
