Reflecting the oral storytelling tradition of rural Ireland, an evocative anthology of twenty-three traditional Irish ghost stories and fairy tales includes "The Magic Ship," "The Legend of Knockmany," and "The Soul Cages" and is accompanied by forty striking photographs. 15,000 first printing.
An enchanting collection of Irish short stories dealing with ghosts, fairies, and the like. I especially enjoyed: The Soul Cages by T. Crofton Crocker, The Fate of the Children of Lir by Joseph Jacobs, and The Priest's Soul by Lady Wilde. Teig O'Kane and the Corpse by Douglas Hyde was unusual, but interesting and creative.
A decent anthology of old Irish tales that were taken from the spoken tradition and written in the years preceding independence. Spoken to written invariably loses some of a story's magic. I've read so many books on the Irish because that is apparently the only gift my mother-in-law gets me without fail. On the plus side, this is the first anthology where the Kanes are the subjects of two stories.
