Theology for Ministry is for beginning ministry students, seasoned lay leaders, and anyone in between who wants to learn more about the faith that feeds their call to serve. Six easy-to-read chapters introduce the main areas of theology that every lay minister ought to the notion of vocation, the doctrine of God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, church, and ministry. By sharing personal stories and simple examples, Edward Hahnenberg brings the Bible to life and dusts off ancient church doctrines—revealing the many ways our tradition can inspire the work of lay ministers today.
I am so pleased that I found this book for the Ministry Proseminar that I'm teaching this fall. It will be a fine foundational piece for young adults discerning a call to lay ecclesial ministry. Hahnenberg works from scripture, church documents and some of the classical writers on ministry in a very concise and accessible format. I think the book could be used by ministers early in their vocation as well as those who are seasoned in their calling. It would be a great resource for self-care groups. His appendix on theological reflection in a group will be a weekly exercise for my students this semester. Hahnenberg covers the foundations of ministry as well as the modern practice. He even includes a discussion about ministry when not agreeing with what Church leaders are saying or doing. In the chapter on discerning one's gifts he writes, "I like to explain things - and I'm pretty good at it!" Indeed.
Wonderful and beautiful ways of looking at ministry! A must read for any minister and highly recommended to others who are simply curious about the Catholic faith and want to enrich their understanding of it.
Amazing book! Every chapter, I loved it more and more. Hahnenberg does a wonderful job describing the fundamentals of what it means to be a minister in the world today.
