I usually enjoy the work of playwright Peter Whelan, but unfortunately I found this play hard to follow and little 'all over the place'. As an actor I also think it would be a tad difficult to stage.
Peter Whelan is a man fascinated by historical events and a majority of this play focuses on the riots of 1830 when farm labourers disapproved of the introduction of machinery that ultimately cost them their jobs. There are many strong themes throughout this play, however much of the seriousness of the piece has been overshadowed by comedy and unrealistic characters.
I guess Peter can be forgiven seeing that Captain Swing was his very first play inspired by his young son. The transition from one scene to the other just seemed a little clunky.
