Mission and Place: Strengthening Learning and Community through Campus Design

Rate this book
Having worked for over 60 colleges and universities and visited hundreds more in careers as institutional planners and designers, the authors have found that in most cases, the physical campus mirrors the issues an institution faces. Mission and Place shows how institutions of higher education can provide leadership in addressing important strategic issues through campus design and planning and how at the same time they can create an enduring legacy. It presents a visionary mission-based framework that the trustees, presidents, and senior administrators of today's colleges and universities, and their design and planning consultants, can use in overall campus planning and design decisions; and it focuses this vision with specific actions that can be undertaken at all levels of institutional governance and administration.

The definitive resource for university administrators planning to build a unique engaging campus. As I was reading,I could definately find some inspiration in what other campuses are doing so I wrote some of the ideas that came to mind which applied to UNC Charlotte:

p4 vitatilty of the institution requires incentives and locales that encourage lingering

p43 natural daylight and operable windows are key to student success, many of our new classrooms at UNC Charlotte lack natural lighting

p18 A rec center is key to university recruiting, "A good rec center has become a key selling point"

p45 views of nature improve performance, outdoor lecture is an option

p49 colleges need to provide a vibrant and exciting campus life to increase the opportunities for students to meet one another

p52 financial incentives to take students to lunch for faculty or reimburse students that take faculty to lunch

p57 encourage IM technology on campus, preinstall Pidgin on every machine, coffee station in EPIC building

p62 a special meeting of city council and university leaders will collaborate ideas

p66 student housing replacing center campus, how would you define campus community in one word?

p79 create or designate a signature building

p96 parking lots on edge of campus give improper perception of the community

p130 residential buildings should be built near classroom spaces, kennedy building or denny building could be replaced with residential

p146 commit to tallories declaration for environmental policy

p182 financial incentives for carpooling students, cheaper parking permits

p185 map of how far students have to walk from each parking complex

p234 suburbanization leads to parking only on edges, produces unsafe areas

p234 bike paths around neighborhoods

p248 cheaper classes on weekends and nights to provide incentives for students to stay on weekends and help non traditional students

p253 grass roof on rec center

revitalize university city blvd. with median reconstruction and collegiate feel
