"Inspired in every sense of that word and masterfully compiled, Seeking God's Face is a prayer book always and everywhere to be treasured.”-- Phyllis Tickle, compiler, The Words of Jesus --A Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord "Life is hard for most of us; at least it is hard to live purely, Christianly. We can only do so by getting a great deal of help from Christ. We need, therefore, daily to seek His face. Phil's book will help you get better acquainted."--Carson Pue, president, Arrow Leadership"This wonderful resource provides an easy to follow process for having a substantive conversation with God each day. I strongly recommend its use to every Christian who desires a deeper relationship with God."--Craig Van Gelder, Professor of Congregational Mission, Luther SeminaryFrom the very beginning of the church, Christians have found it helpful to pause for prayer during various times of the day. Whether for morning or evening devotions or other fixed-time prayers, such spiritual respites were deemed essential to worshiping God. Over the years, Christians developed a structure for such moments of worship, keyed to the time of day and season of the year. Part of its genius was the seamless integration of Scripture and prayer. This ancient practice, called the "Daily Office," has experienced a resurgence of use in our time. Seeking God's Face is a user-friendly approach to this form of prayer and devotion. Each office includes a psalm of praise, a passage of Scripture, and a brief set of prayers. An introduction to prayer-book use from Eugene Peterson is included to acclimate readers to this form of devotional.
Absolutely loved and benefited from using the bible-based, scripture-soaked prayer devotional throughout 2019. I’ll come back to it again another year (at least) for sure. Loved the scripture passages, the prayer suggestions, the variety, the structure, the length, even just the size of the book. Highly, highly, highly recommended - though I acknowledge I had an ‘Anglican prayer-book’ childhood so I’m likely more inclined to enjoy this more than those who don’t have that background. Still, if you’re after a few short bible passages with prayer points to use each morning, this is well worth a look.
For anyone unfamiliar with the way the daily office works, this is the easiest entry point – the box in the upper right corner that mark off the days of the year make this worth the purchase price.
Good, very good. Really enjoyed the format of this devotional book, how it has a beginning meditation verse, a Psalm/song passage, a devotional reading, and a common prayer. It's easy to use, a nice structure to follow each day, and I like the "free prayer" recommendations and then common prayer section. Overall, the free prayer recommendations seemed to be a little repetitive at times, but I guess that are only so many topics.
My very favourite devotional of all time - just scripture and thoughtful prayer - no fluff. It follows the liturgical calendar which has led me to have a better understanding of the rhythms that have guided Christians for centuries. There are dates outlined for the next 15 years and I can’t wait to keep reading year after year.
Excellent devotional—good introduction to the church year. Each day includes Scripture readings, prompts for quiet, contemplation, and prayer, a brief printed prayer.
A beautiful devotional that truly invites you to seek God’s face and experience His kindness and intimacy. I truly enjoyed this and looked forward to meditating on it every morning.
