Rob Parsons has written many bestselling books over the decades, largely focussing on family life, as befits a man who left a law practice to set up Care For the Family, a charity dedicated on helping families. He knows the impact marriage break ups can have on a family, especially the children and knows equally that financial issues and infidelity can impact a marriage and how having a family can put extra strain on a marriage.

Many of his books have followed a “Sixty Minute” format, intending to impart much wisdom in a relatively short book that won’t take long to read, although the effort required to act upon the advice could take, as well as have an impact for, a lifetime. A couple of these books have been adapted into an even shorter format, one of which is this, “The Sixty Second Marriage”.

Unlike his main books, there is no real insight here, with the book being a collection of quotes, some from famous figures, some from his own books and some from children. This gives it a mixture of “Kids Say the Funniest Things” and a “Chicken Soup for the Soul”, with some amusing quotes, some insightful statements and the occasional piece of wisdom. There are no breaks in the pages, so whilst the quotes are collected together to reflect upon various stages of a marriage, it’s not always entirely clear when they have moved on from one to another.

This is a quick read you can rush through, but it’s really more of a gift book as it doesn’t have much depth to it, other than the odd smile. You may find something helpful here, but only by chance and only fleetingly, but if that does happen to you, it’s perhaps an indication you may need to move onto more thoughtful bokos regarding a marriage. This one is pithy and is a little like a map in that it points the way you should go, but doesn’t really illuminate you where you are.
