Four soldiers of the new army marched out of the walls on Sunday. They were heading out to pick up a man who said he could change the world. For the past three years, the world has lived in the midst of chaos and conflict with only small pockets of order and peace. Many men before this one have claimed to know the answer to turning everything around. All of them have failed. So why go? Orders. And the need for hope. And the general feeling that maybe, just maybe, this time will be different. They didn't know how different it would be.
If I'm honest, I wasn't expecting much from this story, only because I am so often disappointed by new novels. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very well-thought out, imaginative, and enjoyable. The author does a very good job of drawing the reader into the characters' lives. The plot is interesting; however, I would have liked a little more background information regarding what exactly brought the world to the state the novel found it in. I'm a little conflicted regarding the conclusion; the premise seemed a little silly, yet Russo managed to pull it off well in my opinion. Altogether, I feel like Ms. Russo is a promising up-and-coming new author, and I hope to see more from her in the future.
