I'd describe my Portuguese as "upper intermediate" - roughly a B2 on the CEFR scale. As it turns out, I didn't get much out of this book personally; it's just too far below my level. However, if you're a lower-intermediate or upper-beginner Portuguese speaker, this book is excellent. It covers all the grammar you'll need to know in an accessible manner, has plenty of exercises and examples (which as a side-effect teach you some interesting stuff about Brazilian culture, politics, and history), and is all-around a good mini-course to help you improve your Portuguese fast.

Most importantly, it focuses on teaching you Portuguese as it's actually spoken in Brazil, not according to the outdated whims of pedantic grammar purists. The dialogues feel realistic, with a good mix of slang and colloquialisms, and the authors aren't afraid to tell you when a fancy grammar construction (like the simple pluperfect) is barely worth knowing because it's almost never used anymore.

I wish I'd read this book a few years ago when I was new to Portuguese.

Very good resource that should be used in conjunction with others to heighten your understanding of how people are using Brazilian Portuguese today.

A very complete and beneficial course for intermediate students of Portuguese. The accompanying audio CDs were also very helpful by providing listening practice for the content presented in the book.
