This series of essays from different Irish educators helps explain the environment in the 1910s and 1920s that surrounded the foundation of the Dáil, the Irish equivalent of parliament. The creation of the Dáil started the final march to Irish independence from Great Britain. But steps to this independence started much earlier in Irish history and this book explains some of the factors that led to the success of Ireland despite the civil war that happened in the 1920s. The book also covers the evolution of the Irish justice system, and the exclusion of women from early Irish politics despite their importance in the war of independence. The essays can be read independently. If you're interested in Irish history and how the early state came together this is worth a read.
