Missing sausages, purple tea, and peas with a side order of Brasso. Join a young Sam Reilly in this vivid and evocative romp through two years of National Service in the 1950s. Read about the times he appeared in court, went AWOL and ended up in hospital on New Year's Eve. It wasn't all larks and games though; with the threat of the Korean War looming, Sam and the other lads were being trained to kill or be killed. The possibility of being sent to the front was very real and, with World War Two only a few years in the past, they might not come back
I quite enjoyed reading about how someone found life during their time of national service. I could definitely see the service sense of humour coming through, and it reminded me of my time in the armed forces. It was an ideal thing to read in front of the fire while it's snowing outside.
