Brooke Adler knows that money can't buy happiness. Born into a wealthy family, she watched her status-driven mother make her father miserable. Determined to break free of society life, Brooke makes a bargain with her grandmother: If Brooke can prove that she can be self-supporting within a year, her grandmother will allow Brooke to give her trust fund to charity. Setting out for the rugged Ouachita Mountains in Oklahoma, Brooke intends to teach art to underprivileged children. But when she is injured in a car accident, she finds herself in the care of Dr. Drew Griffin. Shortly thereafter, financial difficulties force her to take a part-time job at Drew's clinic. He thinks Brooke won't last a week - especially when she faints at the sight of a bleeding woodsman. Determined to prove Drew wrong, Brooke vows to win the respect of the compassionate doctor. And in the process, she learns something about love as well.
Bernadette Tabor Pruitt started her writing career in the fifth grade with pretend newspapers showing male classmates behind bars. Despite that, she was later allowed to write for some real newspapers, including the Tulsa World and the Dallas Morning News. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma Professional Writing Program, she also taught journalism at the college level. A curious traveler, she once spent a year touring Europe and North Africa in a Volkswagen camper with her husband and two small dogs. Other interests include interior decorating, genealogy (she’s half Slavic) and reading. She and her husband live in Wichita Falls, Texas. Her latest book, “Oldies but Goodies,” is about three seniors who sneak off from a retirement home to right the wrongs of their pasts.
Charming story set in the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma features a hard working doctor who falls for an heiress who is seeking independence by teaching art in the mountain schools. Well written with likable main characters and supporting cast of townspeople including a loveable mutt. The couple fight their attraction, realizing that they come from different worlds and never the twain shall meet except for this brief time and space. How they work out the conflict is well done and a page Turner.
Such an uplifting and fun read in a day of gloom and uncertainty. Love the authatthor's premise that maybe we humans do better when we have to struggle a bit. Also important to note caring for one another in community brings joy. Love the characters. Can't wait tcantcao read more of this author's books.

This was a good book for anyone looking for a pick-me-up read. There is some turmoil but throughout it all Brooke remains true to herself and her beliefs. My only issue with the book, like many books, is I want to know what happens...after.
