Adventures of the Restoration #1
Get that Gold!
"Now you have the record in your own hands. But you are only a man. Therefore, you will have to be watchful and faithful to your trust, or you will be overpowered by wicked men who will plan and scheme and get them away from you. If you do not take heed continually, they will succeed." --Angel Moroni upon delivering the Gold Plates to Joseph Smith
With the Angel Moroni's warning still ringing in his ears, young Joseph Smith steps into the woods he knows are crawling with armed men who are bent on stealing the gold plates from him. He retrieves them from their hiding place in a rotted birch log, only to face attack after attack by the money-hungry thieves on his trail! It is up to Joseph--and Joseph alone--to protect and preserve the sacred gold record. But how will he muster the fortitude and faith when the odds are stacked so deeply against him? Will the angel's warning come to pass?

I fully admit, I was apprehensive to read this book. As a practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I revere Joseph Smith as a prophet of God and the Restoration is a real event to me.
But I didn't need to fear! L.T. Downing brings the events of the Restoration to life with both excitement and historical accuracy. Though the events take place over only two days, the pace of the book and the short chapters keep you turning the pages. The characters are realistic, with thoughts and feelings that correspond to Joseph Smith's own written accounts of the events. I felt that I got to know Joseph Smith a little better, and was able to put myself in his shoes as he faced the prospect of finally getting the gold plates--a prospect both much anticipated and feared, and for good reason! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it made me want to re-read the historical accounts. (A note to parents: Downing makes it easy for you to share the historical accounts with your kids. In the endnotes, she references chapter 22 of _History of Joseph Smith by His Mother_.) Downing took very few fictional liberties and stays true to history, while placing you in the woods of Palmyra on that fateful September day.
Though the book is aimed at kids, I would recommend it to adults too! My 1st grader, who is an advanced reader, enjoyed it as well, though some of the vocabulary was over her head. I would recommend it to readers ages 8 and up.

Review of Get That Gold
I found the characters to be very bland and lacking any depth. The good characters were completely good with no flaws to them, the evil characters were simply bad with no redeeming traits or reasoning behind why the way they are.
The characters fall into stereotypical gender roles, with women tending to be subservient to men and doing household chores with the men being more active and aggressive.
The good characters also don’t do very much, they aren’t very action orientated and seem to spend more time praying and hoping for things to turn out for the best rather than making them happen.
Although the back of the book puts it as a young adult category, I feel it is more suitable for much younger children, probably 6 to 10 years old.
In full disclosure I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I liked this book. I started out reading this to my boys ages 7 and 5. They liked the action parts but some of the vocabulary was advanced for them. I think they will love this when they are a little older and better able to grasp the concepts and characters. It was a quick read. The book stays true to history and makes it easy to reference the historic account of Joseph Smith. Through the author you could feel the enormous burden/blessing placed in Joseph's care as he received the gold plates. I also felt the anxiety and helplessness that his family must have felt as they tried to help in whatever way they could. I definitely recommend this book!
