Better Out Than In Number Twos by Adam Wallace was the most sought-after sequel to arrive at our primary school library in 2013. It even managed to top the library’s most reserved list which had been dominated by the original Better Out Than In since its purchase in 2010.

The book follows the same format as Better Out Than In (6 rhyming short stories) and is once again illustrated by the wonderfully talented Heath McKenzie, who has managed to pull off the impossible by out-grossing the first book. Most characters are back committing acts of disgustingness which are even grosser than their past indiscretions.

Valerie's mum sends her to the pool, despite being told that she feels sick; her vomit this time ends up being extra chunky! Nancy has returned from her detention, but finds herself being bored in a maths class, so distracts herself by giving her nose another pick. We again learn of the dangers of farting in public and Bob's mum's vain attempts to civilise him, by introducing him to finer French culture. Pete's pimple is bigger than ever and wreaks havoc after he pops it at the beach.

Missing is Eric's Ear Wax, but is replaced by a story about Nuclear Power Pants, an idea suggested to Adam Wallace whilst giving a workshop to students at Box Hill North Primary School. Adam Wallace has even dedicated Better Out Than In Number Twos to those students.

Like its predecessor Better Out Than In, this book is gross. You just have to read the Author's Warning to find out just how gross the book really is. Heath McKenzie enhances the experience with his totally disgusting illustrations, my favourite being the one that accompanies the following:

The lifeguard, flexing his muscles
for show,

Is now covered in pus from his
head to his toe.

If you are looking for a book that gets children of all ages laughing, squirming, gagging and feigning disgust, this book delivers in abundance!

Not only do kids want to read this book- they want to perform it!
