The Mysterious Mandolin is a tale of two stepsisters whose love for one another must overcome death, wickedness of dark magic, and bullying. This fairy tale juxtaposes the light and the dark side of characters and settings while it examines the lengths to which people would go in order to achieve what they most desire.
The talented author, Aneta Cruz has created a fairy tale for young and old alike. If anyone has ever read a Grimm's Tale then you know they are not your prismatic, sweet stories. The Mysterious Mandolin has magical, dark elements and I was hooked after reading the first page. While writing this review, enthralling and enchanting come to mind.
Aneta Cruz has written one of the most spectacular fairy tales I have ever read. I couldn’t stop reading until I got to that lovely ahhhh moment at the end. Her descriptive world of magic, darkness, and light is amazing.

The Mysterious Mandolin is a dark fairy tale. It's the story of Rosalynn, a beautiful girl who is neglected and rejected by her step-mother, Dethdemona. Mathelda, Dethdemona's daughter, is half human and half troll and though is not neglected by her mother, she is bullied and controlled by her. Still though, she develops a love and friendship for her half-sister.
Dethdemona concocts an evil plan to tear apart the kingdom and avenge her sister's death. She will trick the king into marrying Mathelda by using Rosalynn's beauty and desperation for her step-mother's affection. The plan, as you will hope, goes horribly wrong.
This was a quick and delightful read. Like most fairy tales, there is a fair bit of darkness here, but the story is told in a way that keeps you reading page after page. You'll cheer for the good guys and boo the bad guys. You'll cross your fingers and hope that Dethdemona gets what she deserves.
At 87 pages, you can easily start and finish this in one sitting and you will definitely not want to put it down.

The Mysterious Mandolin has every ingredient of a great fairy tale. While keeping true to classic fairy tale themes, it has an enchanted forest, witches and magic. Yet it's a truly unique story at its core, which comes from the haunting music of the mandolin and the love between two step-sisters, different but alike in many ways, and what happens when they are pitted against in each in the quest for love and happiness.
Adults and children will enjoy this book and it's beautiful illustrations.
I was given a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This story is a fairy tale, but not your normal fairy tale. It has a bit of a dark side. I would say that it reminds me a bit of Grimm Fairy Tales, but not to worry, it isn't gory, so it is fine for adults and children. It has witches, a king and his kingdom, an enchanted forest, secrets, and of course a wicked stepmother. Some will achieve their happy ending, but it will not come easily. Some will not be as lucky.
A great short read! The story also includes several nice illustrations.
The Mysterious Mandolin, by Aneta Cruz, is the enchanting tale of Rosalynn, a beautiful young orphan girl raised by her stepmother Dethdemona who is an evil witch. Dethdemona, intent upon seeking revenge for her sister's death, devises a plan involving Rosalynn and the king. With all the elements of classic storytelling, Cruz has crafted a hauntingly beautiful tale in which intrigue and suspense abound.
