It's hard to make friends in a small Minnesota town when the most entertainment around is watching the snow fall. Socially awkward Nadia Knight doesn't know how she can live up to the promise she made her brother to make friends before summer when the only people she spends time with are the dead.
Between studying mortuary sciences and going to her best friend's musical gigs, she runs into - literally, with her car - a cute punk rocker named Anthony, although his friends call him Banshee. And he might just be the friend she's been waiting to make...and more.
But Anthony has a secret more fragile than paper and string.
(Paper & String is a prequel novella to Mutilate My Heart. It is 16,000 words and contains spoilers for MMH.)
Emily Godwin is a Young Adult author. She enjoys writing, painting, and sewing her own line of non-evil voodoo dolls. She's a Slytherin, trying to disguise herself as a Hufflepuff, and wishes she could read herself into books.
When I love a group of characters, I always want more, so I was super excited when Emily decided to tell Nadia and Banshee's back story of how they met and how she found out the big secret that the band is hiding. Nadia's voice is very different from Becca's in MMH, and while I liked Becca, I really love Nadia. She's dark and unique and has been socially awkward in the world due to those quirks, but then she meets someone who perfectly fits the mold she's looking for... sort of. Her comparisons to death, The Corpse Bride, and such really show who she is and gives her personality.
I wasn't a huge fan of Banshee or Nightmare in MMH, but this novella sheds light on both of their characters and lets you see them through another set of eyes closer to the situation. Banshee's awkwardness around girls is absolutely adorable, and Nightmare finally gives Mutilated fans a little insight into things we learned in MMH. I'm definitely excited for more Mutilated Arteries, and I hope everyone else hangs around to follow Nadia's journey in the next novella that will uncover all the answers/secrets that you're all dying to know. (But hey, I'm Emily's sister, so I already know...)
*Warning*: Do not read this book if you haven't read Mutilate My Heart. It contains spoilers!!
This was a such a cute little book which gives us some great insight into Nadia and Banshee. I loved finding out how Nadia became a part of the Mutilated Arteries' world. She was a really cool character, so unique and quirky. And Banshee was so cute. I loved how awkward and shy he was around Nadia. I would have loved a bit more from his POV. And a bit of light is shed on Nightmare too. I wasn't that gone on him in MMH but it was nice to see him from someone else's perspective. It makes you understand him a bit more. I can't wait for more books in this series. If you haven't read these awesome books yet then you really should! I love em :)
Another excellent story from Emily Godwin! If you're familiar with the characters from MMH, this is a great novella that gives a back story to the band Mutilated Arteries. Nothing to hate about this novella except that I want more and I'm looking forward to the next in the series. <3 Nadia and Banshee.
I enjoyed hearing how the mortician and the dead guy met. It was a cute little story. I hope their relationship lasts and Nadia can figure out just how they came to being the walking dead.I think Nightmare needs to meet back up with Dawn. lol I'm looking forward to more installments in this series.
