This edition is included in "The Runaways (Runaways Series #1)

2045-The United States Government has collapsed completely, even at the state and local levels. Now everyone must fend for themselves. Militia groups are formed, each vying for total control. A war breaks out; treaties are agreed up on, and eventually they settle into three independent communities: the Anarchist(the lawless), Devotees(the conformist), and Altruist(the accepting). In the midst of this new order is Faye, born to an un-wed Devotees, who loathes her in every way, and abuses her in ways no mother should. Faye is forced to choose between running away and risking her life in order to find a better life for herself, or accepting her fate---that her mother will never love her. However, she is not alone.

I received this book for free from Smashwords via a free coupon code from the author through Goodreads.

I just couldn't bring myself to finish this one, even though it was only 49 pages on my Nook. The writing was rough, with several overly long sentences with awkward word choices and order, numerous grammatical errors, extremely judicious use of commas, and dialogue that was nonsensical and difficult to follow. As an example, here's how chapter 5 begins, I matched the formatting exactly as it appears on my Nook:

Mist blanketed the dark.
The harsh, unforgiving winter bit venomously into the living, replacing warmth with icy pricks, meandering through veins and muscles.
Liam sat on a stack of hay inside the old broken down barn house, shredding strands of hay, one piece at a time, almost as if he'd been taking his life apart, and throwing it to the wind, trying to find meaning for it, breath frozen in wisp of white.
He was mad at the world and himself...

I struggled through 25 pages of this before I had to put it down and relegate it to the dnf (Did Not Finish) shelf. I had thought this would be a quick read, and looked forward to reading a good short story, as it has been many years since I've read anything within that particular genre. Alas, it was not to be...

Quick and interesting read. I don't usually read short stories but as it happened, today I felt like giving this one a chance. The author did a good job at making the characters come to life. Their world sounded real enough to catch my attention. Most of all, although I sure would want to know what happens next, it still has some kind of ending, so it didn't make me want to throw my iPad on the wall.

The reason I give this only a four 4 stars is because it's so short. We don't get enough time to get a real feel for the story, but if you don't mind the length (or rather the lack of it)then by all means this is one you need to read.

Okay I'm sure the story for this one is good…and it seems that way. It started out great honestly, BUT I could not stand the incorrect use of punctuation and errors. I don't mind some in a work, it happens. But this was so extensive I just couldn't finish it.
