Πρώτη φορά που διαβάζω κινηματογραφικό σενάριο! Στις αρχικές σελίδες, βέβαια, μού φάνηκε λίγο δύσκολο εγχείρημα το να ξεχωρίσω τους χαρακτήρες και να τους πλάσω με τη φαντασία μου, να οριοθετήσω το σκηνικό της δράσης και να περιηγηθώ με άνεση στον κόσμο που στηνόταν μπροστά μου. Στη συνέχεια, όμως, το έργο με απορρόφησε, αφού οι ήρωες και οι σχέσεις μεταξύ τους αντικατόπτριζαν έναν κόσμο σε παρακμή, που εν πολλοίς θυμίζει την δική μας εποχή.
Το σενάριο γράφτηκε λίγο πριν την έναρξη του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου και αποτέλεσε ένα σχόλιο πάνω στην κοινωνική κατάσταση, με το παρόν σε τέλμα και με το μέλλον ανέλπιδο. Οι πλούσιοι της εποχής, αριστοκράτες και επιχειρηματίες, με συζύγους ανικανοποίητες - ανικανοποίητοι και οι ίδιοι- που αναζητούν σε φευγαλέες ερωτικές σχέσεις την πληρότητα. Και από την άλλη, οι φτωχοί, εργαζόμενοι στα σπίτια και τις επιχειρήσεις των πλουσίων: κι εκείνοι εγκλωβισμένοι σε αδιέξοδους γάμους και, παράλληλα, θύματα της αναζήτησης μέσων επιβίωσης.
Κι όλα αυτά, στα τέλη του Φθινοπώρου, με φόντο ένα δάσος και μια λίμνη όπου ακούγονται μέσα στη νύχτα τα κοάσματα των βατράχων. Χώρος εκτύλιξης της κύριας δράσης ο πύργος του αριστοκράτη με την άπιστη γυναίκα, που είναι πόλος έλξης για πολλούς άντρες, με σκηνικά άλλοτε στην κάμαρά της, άλλοτε στην κουζίνα όπου δρουν οι υπηρέτες και άλλοτε στη μεγάλη σάλα, όπου θα οργανωθεί μια γιορτή, η οποία θα λήξει με απρόοπτο τρόπο.
Το τέλος κακό, απρόβλεπτο και συγκλονιστικό περισσότερο για μας παρά για τους μάρτυρες της συμφοράς, οι οποίοι δεν φαίνεται να πτοούνται από τίποτα, αλλά ασχολούνται μόνον με τα προσωπικά τους εγωκεντρικά ζητήματα, δικαιολογώντας με απάθεια ακόμη και το χειρότερο συμβάν που δεν τους αφορά άμεσα. Η γεύση που μένει στον αναγνώστη -και μάλλον και στον θεατή της ταινίας- απαισιόδοξη: τίποτα δεν αλλάζει, καθώς όλοι είμαστε δέσμιοι κανόνων που προαποφασίστηκαν χωρίς εμάς και συνεχίζουν να ισχύουν σε έναν κόσμο ο οποίος δεν πρόκειται να βελτιωθεί ποτέ.
"Θέλουμε δε θέλουμε, υπάρχουν κανόνες" θα πει ο πιλότος Ζιριό, ο ήρωας με τις τόσες ζητωκραυγές προς το πρόσωπό του, ενώ ο γερασμένος Οκτάβ σχολιάζει: "σ' αυτή τη γη υπάρχει ένα φρικτό πράγμα: Ο καθένας έχει το δίκιο του". Πώς, λοιπόν, να ξεχωρίσει κανείς το καλό και το κακό, όταν όλοι τελούν σε σύγχυση, όταν οι αξίες έχουν τσαλαπατηθεί και όλοι ψεύδονται;
"'Ακουσε, Κριστίν, και αυτό συμβαίνει στην εποχή μας! Ζούμε σε μια εποχή όπου όλος ο κόσμος ψεύδεται: Τα προσπέκτους των φαρμάκων, οι κυνερνήσεις, το ραδιόφωνο, ο κινηματογράφος, οι εφημερίδες... Λοιπόν, γιατί εμείς οι άλλοι, οι απλοί πολίτες να μη λέμε ψέμματα;" θα ρωτήσει ο Οκτάβ την Κριστίν, τη γυναίκα γύρω από την οποία περιφέρονται τόσοι άνθρωποι, ενισχύοντας άθελά τους τη ματαιοδοξία και τη σύγχυσή της.
Στο φόντο της σκιαγράφησης των χαρακτήρων βρίσκονται το κυνήγι των κουνελιών, μια ιδιόρρυθμη συλλογή από μηχανικά παιχνίδια του ιδιοκτήτη του πύργου και μια σειρά από παρεξηγήσεις και πλάνες. Συμβολισμοί που αναφέρονται στην αντιηρωική και αποσυντονισμένη πολύπλοκη εποχή πριν την έκρηξη του πολέμου, αλλά δυστυχώς φτάνουν ως και το σήμερα. Κι όμως, το έργο ξεκινά με την υποδοχή ενός ήρωα- πιλότου.
Ο Οκτάβ θα σχολιάσει στην ερωτευμένη Κριστίν αναφορικά με τον φλογερό και διάσημο πιλότο της: "Η περίπτωσή του είναι το δράμα όλων των σύγχρονων ηρώων. Αυτοί οι άνθρωποι, όταν πετούν στα σύννεφα είναι θαυμάσιοι... Κι όταν προσγειώνονται στη γη είναι αδύναμοι, φτωχοί, αφοπλισμένοι, αδέξιοι σαν παιδιά. Είναι ικανοί να διασχίσουν τον Ατλαντικό και ανίκανοι να διασχίσουν τα Ηλύσια Πεδία με τα πόδια! Τι να κάνεις; έτσι είναι:"
Το τέλος, σε αντίστιξη προς την αρχή, θα απογυμνώσει τον ενθουσιώδη αεροπόρο και θα αφήσει μετέωρη κάθε ελπίδα για σωτήρια παρέμβαση εκ μέρους των ηρώων, εγκαταλείποντας τα δρώντα πρόσωπα -αλλά και εμάς, δυστυχώς- σε μια πικρή και ταυτόχρονα τρομακτική συνειδητοποίηση: ήρωες δεν υπάρχουν και κανείς δεν μπορεί να μας γλυτώσει...!

La Règle du Jeu aka The Rules of The Game by Jean Renoir

This is a masterpiece that some have listed at number one-
- Best film ever made
- Others have placed it just under Citizen Kane
It is surely a chef d’oeuvre.
Roger Ebert said that:
- One cannot simply watch this, one needs to absorb it
- It is so simple and so labyrinthine, so guileless and so angry, so innocent and so dangerous…
Indeed, there are a series of love affairs that mostly go wrong, but otherwise The Rules of the Games seem to involve everyone cheats on everyone else.
And yet it is so much more complicated than multiple, crossing love interests and the jealousy, envy, hate that can be involved therein.
Andre Jurieu opens the narrative with his crossing of the Atlantic, the record established and the consequent media frenzy to cover the story.
But he is very upset amidst his victory, because Christine de la Cheyniest, the woman he loves and for whom he has embarked on the perilous journey is not present there to welcome him and he feels betrayed.
Christine is an Austrian married to Le Marquis Robert de la Cheyniest, who had been involved in an affair with Geneviève de Marras, for three years before marrying his spouse.
To complicate matters in this complicated threesome that becomes a foursome and then more, Octave is a father figure who comes often to see Christine, he tries to protect her, but this affection becomes more complex.
These characters and guests travel to the chateau belonging to the rich marquis and Le Jeu is at its peak.
In this carnival of emotions, betrayal, love and deception we have servants that are involved: Lisette, her husband Schumacher and the would be lover Marceau.
Animosities become friendships, platonic relationships get close to being intimate and there is a Dance To The Music of Time, to refer to another masterpiece.
The Rules of the Game seem to refer also to social standards, etiquette and politeness, even if they appear ridiculous when opposed to real, all conquering love, such as in the instance when there is the question of running away:
- C’est pas comme il faut- ok, but without going as far as saying the silly “all is fair in love and war”, it still appears that if they love each other, they should just run for it, especially since the other parties involved have been having their own affairs
I also thought about the strange perspective that the French have on their personalities and their shenanigans, like in the cases of Dominique Strauss Kahn, Mitterrand and many others, known to have had in cases outrageous behavior and excesses and yet hide them under a thick cover of fog, without a mention in the press.
The complexity of the intimacy, then the distance placed between personages made me also remember the classic:
- Games People Play by Eric Berne
There is a hunt wherein many rabbits, pheasants and other game are killed, but there is also a chase for rivals and human trophies.
The rivals physically fight each other, in some instances try and shoot one another, but then they also become close, in a strange contradiction of the initial conflict.
Just when we expect one hero to become blissfully happy, he ends up on the ground and the reverse is true for others that we thought will reach a nadir and arrive at the finish line walking on their feet and even smiling.
Jean Renoir was the son of the great Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, whose other children became artists…indeed, one of the others was an actor playing Octave in this magnificent film.
Robert Altman said about La Règle du Jeu:
- "I learned the rules of the game from 'The Rules of the Game,'„ and Roger Ebert said that this film “was not a million miles off from this plot with his "Gosford Park" -- right down to the murder.”

وقتی جهان در آستانهی جنگ ایستاده، آدمها هم در آستانهی فروپاشیاند. قاعدهی بازی، فیلمیست دربارهٔ هیچکس و همهکس؛ دربارهٔ کسانی که برای زنده ماندن در جهانی متزلزل، چنگ میزنند به بازیهایی که خود قواعدش را نمیدانند.
ژان رنوار در این شاهکار، کمدیای سیاه میسازد از طبقهٔ بورژوازی، از مهمانیهای اشرافی و روابط سطحیشان، اما ورای این ظاهر شوخ و سبکسر، تصویری هولناک از بشریت پیشِرو میگذارد؛ بشریتی که بهطرز غمانگیزی گرفتار بیعملیست، و پشت ادب، فرهنگ و نازکدلی، تنها چیزی که پنهان شده، ناتوانیست در دوست داشتن.
در یک خانهٔ اشرافی، مهمانانی جمع میشوند. عاشق و معشوق، همسر و همسر، رقیب و رقیب. همه م��دانند که دیگری دروغ میگوید. همه وانمود میکنند که نمیدانند. بازی همین است: وانمود کردن. وانمود به عشق، به صداقت، به ادب. آنکه قوانین را زیر پا میگذارد، محکوم به مرگ است. نه چون خلاف کرده، بلکه چون واقعیت را بیپرده گفته.
رنوار، همزمان شاعر است و جامعهشناس؛ هم تراژدی مینویسد، هم فکاهی. دوربینش با مهربانی روی چهرهها میلغزد، اما همین مهربانیست که ریا را رسوا میکند. انگار بخواهد بگوید: آدمی، موجودیست که نه بهخاطر بدیهایش، که بهخاطر ترسهایش تباه میشود.
نمای آخر، مرگ، بهت، و تشریفات بورژوایی که بیوقفه ادامه مییابد… این، پایان نیست؛ آغاز یک تکرار بیپایان است. رنوار به ما میگوید که جنگ، تنها برآمده از سیاست نیست. از همین مهمانیهای محترمانه هم میشود به سوی مرگ لغزید. چون آنچه نمیتوان به زبان آورد، راهش را از دهانهٔ تفنگ پیدا میکند.

Never played this game before… Like a reality show but set in France before WW2.

I know that this was supposed to be one of the best films ever but I just didn't enjoy all that much. This is a French farce. Many people say that this is the best film ever - others say 'Citizen Kane' . I am in the house of Orson Wells.

A film of questionable depth, albeit the choreographed slapstick scenarios. One wonders how Renoir directed such a fail (sorry) after such a masterpiece as Grand Illusion.

The best movie ever made about the social order, the greatest of all French films, and maybe even, arguably, the finest of all films, period... I'm watching, again, my Criterion DVD of the gorgeous restoration of the Jean Renoir's dark 1939 farce, finding new things in the inexhaustible depths of this work. Like Kubrick's massively misunderstood, Eyes Wide Shut I find dozens of new revelations and layers of meaning each time I watch this. Rules of the Game is a movie I didn't really understand until I reached the age of 40; you have to live a bit to recognize the implications of what it's saying. A bit of jadedness and bruising helps. What it says about the mutually agreed upon masks we wear and the lies we all tell while knowing they are falsehoods are issues I will, hopefully get back to discussing when time permits...
