Marge Lial (late) was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Her desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was most recently affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, Marge’s travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks, involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

So math books and I have never gotten along. I never learned math well through a book, however I had to take a Business Analysis class that was heavy algebra based (a math topic I hadn't learned about since early high school- so about 10 years ago)and this book was a lifesaver. This managed to not only teach me, but earn me an A. The pre-algebra review at the beginning was immensely helpful.
There are numerous practice problems, definitions of terms that are understandable, and formulas that are explained.
I cannot tell you much about the calculus portion, we only briefly learned pre-calculus, which the book did a great job of teaching me. I knew how to do derivatives after reading this.

I was in an online class, so I had to teach myself. This basically taught me everything I needed to know, while also relating heavily to business and how to apply these topics in real world situations.

This is, in my opinion, the worst mathematics textbook at this level I have ever encountered. Basically, in stretching from Algebra I to Calculus I in less than 900 pages of main text, this tries to do too much. Here is a list of particular issues I have, which I stopped adding to less than half-way through:

- A serious lack of set theory basis, so that solving an equation is no different from solve for a variable. (There is no concept of solution set)
- Intercepts are treated as values, not points
- They encourage by example negative lead coefficients in denominators
- There is a missing introduction of basic functions leading to no clear development of transformations in graphing.
- The integrated My Math Lab material misleads students by not using parentheses in logarithms
- The modeling of exponential growth with P(t) = Pe^(rt) is artlessly handled so that the concept of r relating to percentage growth over unit of time is lost.

Commonly as with other texts of this content and era, intercepts are not required to be point notation and this confuses students later, says, with axis of symmetry. Value or linear equation?

The textbook author and integrated My Math Lab content does not sufficiently differentiate from natural base e or other base models. In a specific problem, both natural base and calculated base should be accepted but they are not. e as a base could be the first pass by a student
reading page 193 of the book. The base-e solution is not accepted. (Also four decimals of accuracy is unnecessary. Three would be better. Specifically, three decimals makes it easier to point students to various online calculators when they don't have a TI or equivalent. Basically, it would be best to use this book only when TI-83 or -84 is required)

I took this for my Business Calculus class. We did chapters 1-5 and 11-12, skipping 6-10, so I can't really comment on those. Chapters 1-4 were mostly review from Pre-Calculus and Algebra II. Chapter 5 was an introduction to business formulas and calculations. Chapters 11 and 12 were the Calculus proportions of the course. the book presented the material in an easy to understand manner, except when it came to the Chain Rule and often switching between the Newtonian and Leibniz notations for the derivative with problems and examples, which rather annoyed me. I preferred the Newtonian. (See, I really read this book and worked hard in the class!). This book came in loose-leaf form, which was rather annoying, but I could also take out the chapters I didn't need. I bought this book is a pack (it cost me an unfortunate $150); it also came with an online Pearson code where I had to do homework and a solutions manual. A lot of answers were in the back of the book, but the manual showed the process step by step so I found it very helpful. I worked hard in this class, probably the hardest that I have worked in any class and I did well in it, I am proud to say. I know I earned my grade.
