German Art from Beckmann to Richter: Images of a Divided Country

Rate this book
This survey of German art between 1945 and 1990 compares how art mirrored the different political circumstances in the two German states during the period. The book looks at how German artists responded to the Nazi dictatorship, the Holocaust, the world war, and other political developments, and shows that the dividing line between East and West was less strict than has been imagined. 200 color and 100 b&w illustrations .

excellent overview of art in Germany from the end of WWII ( and actually some of the pre and during the war art) until the present. very detailed and complete although I would have preferred a more linear discussion that put the art in the context of the era
