Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (Bangla: বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়) was an Indian Bangali author and one of the leading writers of modern Bangla literature. His best known work is the autobiographical novel, Pather Panchali: Song of the Road which was later adapted (along with Aparajito, the sequel) into the Apu Trilogy films, directed by Satyajit Ray.
The 1951 Rabindra Puraskar, the most prestigious literary award in the West Bengal state of India, was posthumously awarded to Bibhutibhushan for his novel
Some of these stories have been considered as classic ghost stories by critics since ages, while some of them, despite being seminal 'strange tales' have been neglected in a rather unfair manner. These stories had been scattered across different volumes of the author's Collected Works. Finally, the publishers have, in their thematic zeal, at least given us the opportunity to have many of these old favourites together to read. The production values are also good, although some information in the shape of first publication of these stories or their critical reception would have been great help. However, even without such editorial contribution, this book is highly recommended.
Bibhuti Bhushan creates a magical world, with his words that exude compassion, love and humanity. I have always thought that along with Jibanananda Das and Mahasweta Devi, he should have been awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. As a writer, I have learned from him how to create a picture -- rural, urban, or semi-urban, and immediately draw you in. I have learned from him how to create a realistic conversation, using grassroots language. I have learned from him how to understand intricacies of human relationship.
Bibhuti Bhushan's অলৌকিক গল্পসম্ভার is only a small example of the mega-magnetic power he had: once you start reading his story or novel -- any piece -- you are spellbound and mesmerized. We know about Pather Panchali, and perhaps Chander Pahar, but we don't know much about Aranyak, Icchamati, or Ashani Sanket. And his incredible treasure trove of short stories -- both for adults and children. I have translated three of his short stories for my new book "Music Box and Moonshine" (2018). People who are into literature -- please do justice to this man: read well before rating his work. Thank you.
A realm outside the daily grind of stressful city life.
Typical bibhuti writings. Most of the stories are not ghost stories. Mainly, mind tricks and others are black arts. Well described with good story telling. Sometimes I think I am reading a novel instead of a short story. lol.
