When I received my copy from my local book dealer the first thing I noticed was the size, Most books published by heathen writers usually have a similar thickness and size, Asatru Book of Days was larger and thicker than is the norm, So I was impressed right off the bat, The book is intended to inspire the reader, To live a life of worth, and to find meaning in living a heathen life, IMO this is not a 'how to book' nor does it give answers to the question of why, But an aid to those that have made the transition back to the Old Gods already, At first glance I thought it lacked material but when I started reading it a bit more I realized the work that went into this book was not in random quotes from the various lore, But the fact that the author must have poured thru the lore to find the perfect quote for that particular day, And the thought and reflection it took to find his own inspiration and meaning to each and every quote and to pen his own meaningful thoughts isn't an easy task. That in itself takes considerable time and understanding.. So what I thought it lacked in Material it more than made up for with substance, I really like this book and recommend it to any who are considering it, If there is one thing I felt that could of made it better is that it could have had some Art, A mix of photos or Painting or images of artifacts...That would have been a nice addition, Other than that Im glad I made this purchase!
I think this is the first book I have ever bought that will take me a year to finish... :)
It's a daily reader. I read one page every day. Bryan puts a quote from the Lore and then briefly discusses it. What I really like about it is the space he leaves so we can write down our own thoughts about the passage of the day. I found this very helpful because it helps us to interact with the Lore, giving it relevance for the modern day. Asatru has become a valid path for me and this book helps. Bryan also uses different names for the months. Instead of January, February, March, etc. He uses Harvest, Hay, Hunter, Corn, etc. Not in that order,of course. That would be a spoiler... But calling those months by those names somehow helps to transport my mind to a much older time. It's really a good book! I'm glad I have it. I'm considering buying this book again, so I can rewrite the entries. It's something I can pass down to my children and their children. Just so they can see where my mind was at LOL....
