The Better Date than Never Series, Boxed Set Vol. #1

Dating is so much easier when you have good friends to lean on. . . .

This book bundle includes three contemporary romance novellas for one low price:

Love at First Date, Book #1

Ellen’s figured out that finding the right guy is all about compatibility. That’s why she signs up for Detailed Dating—the local online dating scene in Sacramento. They ask men the hard questions, compare their answers with hers, then she filters through the profiles of each provided “match.” After numerous email exchanges, she narrows it down to two promising candidates she’s excited to meet in person.

When Ellen’s best friend asks her for a favor, dog-sitting leads to disaster and Ellen ends up at the local vet where she meets a man she can’t get out of her mind. Henry isn’t a logical choice, but she finds herself paying for dog obedience class to spend more time with him.

Ellen knows that in order to have a lasting relationship, she should take the safe route and go for one of the pre-screened guys. But, how can she think with her head when her heart keeps begging her to give Henry a chance?

Truth or Date, Book #2

Gina Hall is done with men who won’t commit. Ten years waiting for her ex to propose wasted her time. Never again. When her friend Kristen starts a game of Truth or Dare, she dares Gina to go on a date with Ethan, who’s amazing and total marriage material.

As Gina plans the going away party for office playboy Chris Bradley, she spontaneously initiates a game of Truth or Dare with him. When his turn comes around, he dares Gina to pose as his girlfriend to help get a flirty colleague off his back. Gina finds playing couple with Chris way too much fun.

Even though Gina and Chris are pretending, their relationship begins to feel painfully real. Fearing she might be falling for another fly-by man, Gina must focus on Ethan so she doesn’t make the same dating mistakes all over again.

My Last Blind Date, Book #3

It’s Valentine’s Day and Rachel Price has a choice: Stay home and watch TV with her loveable doggy or let her best friend, Ellen, set her up on a blind date. What to do….

Ellen says the guy is a “10,” but the last guy she set her up with was a “–5.” Rachel’s been flirting with coworker Noah Peterson and she’s hoping he’s noticed. Then, she finds out Noah has big plans. Even worse, he advises Rachel to go on the blind date!

Should she play it safe and spend the Hallmark holiday with her loyal pooch, Chester, or risk another dating disaster by trying yet again for love?

Better Date Than Never by Susan Hatler is a 2013 Hatco Inc. publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
There are three short contemporary romances in this box set , which is approximately 148 pages in length. The first story is Ellen's. Ellen has a career working in customer service at a computer software firm. She has an anal personality and a mother that has not had the best of luck with men. Watching her mother go through heartbreaking times, Ellen thinks the best relationships are with those we are the most compatable with. When her good friend Rachel has trouble with her dog Chester, Ellen takes him to dog training class and meets the guy her heart says is "the one", but her brain says they are not compatable.
Story number two is Gina's. Gina has FINALLY gotten the message that her long time boyfriend just isn't going to ever talk about the future or marriage. So, Gina is being pushed in Ethan's direction by Ellen who is preparing for her wedding. However, Chris is the one that makes her heart skip. Will she have the nerve to go for it ?
The third story is Rachel's. After a bad break up, Rachel is not feeling the whole HEA thing like her two friends. When she is set up on blind date with Noah, she firmly puts her foot down and refuses to consider it, until Ellen bites back and over rides Rachel's objections. Could Noah be the one Rachel has been looking for?

All three of these short stories have a theme. First of all, never settle for the most comfortable relationships. Secondly, put your preconceived notions on a shelf and third, be willing to take a chance, even if you get turned down, you never know how things might work out. I enjoyed the first two stories, but Rachel's story was not meaty enough. I wanted see Rachel's HEA examined in a little more detail, but overall all this is a great collection of light contemporary romance stories. There is a low steam level so this book could appeal to all romance readers. Overall I give this one an A. (4 stars)

All over review:

I usually do not care too much for short stories they leave so much out with very little story to be read. In this case it was well worth the read all three books were fun loving, with humor that the author took time to get it just right. The stories didn’t not have missing words that make you wonder what happen, it was well written with an easy flow that make the writing style one of the best short stories I have read in a while. These stories are about looking for love in all the wrong places and finding it where you least expect it. They are clean reads without pages of pages of unwanted fill in that you just want to skip over. If you are looking for a fun loving, caring, clean passion then this is the stories for you. I would recommend you picking up and giving it a read you will love it.

Review on each book:

Love at First Date, Book #1

A cute short romance about looking for love in all the wrong places only to find it right in front of you where you least expected. People can be too much alike or think they want something they do not. Sometimes compatibility is over rated we can be too compatible or think we want one thing when in fact it isn’t what we want at all.

Elle felt she needed to find someone compatible she signed up on Detailed Dating site. She did her profile and got her dates. The dates were all wrong she found what she really wanted was what she didn’t want at all.

This was a cute little read that is a funny clean reads about finding the mate of your dreams at first site. If you want an easy fast fun read this is the book for you.

Truth or Date, Book #2

This is a fun loving clean book that will keep you smiling and even give you a few laughs. I really enjoy reading this I loved the truth or dare. This is a wonderful short romance with lots of humor, caring, confusion for the characters. Poor Gina has been stuck in a relationship that is going nowhere fast. She decides to end it move on to someone who is interested in marriage and a family. She is oblivious to what Chris really wants in life and who he wants. All her friends play truth or dare it’s a fun game one finds out a lot when one is dared to do things. She must plan a going away party for Chris who is changing jobs, she plays truth or dare with him. He decides to make it worth his wild and asked her to pretend to be his girlfriend which leads to a lot of laughs. She is torn between Ethan her blind date and Chris. Ethan is a sweetheart but there are no sparks he does want marriage and a family. Chris is a playboy who changes women as many times as he changes underwear. There is a reason for this and we do find out what that reason is as the book ends. Sparks sure to fly when those two are together.

Gina doesn’t know if she should go with her heart and the sparks or if she should take the safe road. She has to pick one and take him to the wedding, she decides to take neither. Gina sure is surprised when both turn up what will she do?

My Last Blind Date, Book #3

A very short little read to remind us life can bring unexpected surprises. It was a charming little read that shows us sometimes blind dates are the very best surprises we could have. That is about all I can say without giving the book away. It was well written with a lovely story.

Susan Hatler has compiled three short story novels into one into box. The books follow Ellen, Rachel, and Gina as they decide dating difficulties after previous long term relationships.
Book 1: Love at First Date
Ellen, Rachel, Gina, Craig (justUnME), Geoff (lookn4luv) and Henry are the main characters. Ellen thinks, “I just celebrated my thirtieth birthday…two failed marriages…which is why I recently signed up at Detailed Dating…popular online dating site.” She communicates via email with two prospects, justUnME and lookn4luv, and decides to go to the next step of arranging a meeting. Before the meetings are arranged, while babysitting her friend’s dog, Chester, he gets sick and she rushes him to the veterinarian hospital where she meets Henry. Now her dilemma is deciding which man to actually date.
Book 2: Truth or Dare
Gina and Chris are co-workers, neither knowing the other likes each other. Gina has lived with George for ten years and he does not want to get married. They break up and in a truth or dare game with Chris, Gina is challenged to a truth or ‘date’. The date is a cover for Chris who does not want to attend a dinner party alone. Since Gina never chooses truth, she is forced to go on a date with Chris against her better judgment. Problems arise when Gina is set up on a blind date and she has a date with Chris. What will she do?
Book 3: My Last Blind Date
“The only thing worse than having a blind date on Valentine’s Day is having no date at all….Rachel Price, was dateless.” Rachel had broken up with her boyfriend, Jeremy. Ellen, her friend, had set her up on numerous blind dates including Valentine’s Day. Rachel refuses to do another blind date and is finally convinced to go ahead with it. If only she had followed her intuition, she would be at home cleaning her refrigerator.
Welcome to the world of mini-story land. Susan Hatler has written delightful, funny and humorous mini novels worth reading. Each book was no more than ninety or so pages. The mini novels deal with dating in the present. I can identify with some of the situations, but I will not tell because I refuse to incriminate myself. However, I do recommend these mini stories be read by both, women and men. I dare you to identify yourself, laugh out loud and smile as you read. Have fun reading!

I knew I would like this series as I previously read and reviewed Love at First Date (Book 1 in this series). https://www.goodreads.com/review/edit...

Truth or Date - This was a cute story about Gina. You learn about her breakup in book 1. In this story, she is dating again. Her friend hooks her up with the handsome Ethan. At the same time, Chris is leaving the office and flirting. He truth or dare's Gina being his fake girlfriend at a new office meeting. Chris is great, but this is all fake, right? What about Ethan?

My Last Blind Date - This isn't even a Novella. It's a microstory about Rachel. She's been on so many blind dates that she is sick of it. Now it's valentine's day and Ellen is setting her up on another one. She wants to say no, but the new guy in the office (that's she's been flirting with to no avail) has talked her into it. What happens at the end of this date?

I just loved this collection of 3 romantic, contemporary novellas.
The story's are about Ellen, Gina and Rachel.
The first book is Ellen's story. A 30 year old women on the dating scene looking for Mr. Right on the internet. Her picks don't always turn out that well.
The second book keeps you guessing right until the end who Gina will pick as her finale choice as a boy friend. It was sweet and funny.
In the third book Rachel takes the plunge and goes on a mystery blind date on valentines day.
The women are friends and they appear in each of the story's which was nice.
These 3 novellas were romantic, fun and a joy to read, they were great.

Creating the Better Date than Never series has been a blast and I'm excited to have the first bundle available.

Finding love can be hard, but navigating the dating field is so much easier with good friends to lean on. These characters have become dear friends, and I'm excited to write the next book. :)

This is a super sweet dating box set. I love that each story follows another of the girls you meet in the beginning of the set. Each story is cute, sweet and wonderful little romances. They are short, but worth it to lose yourself in a day of Valentine's love!

1 Love at First Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 1)A Woodward Systems Corporation Romance by Susan Hatler
5 stars
I purchased the short novella Love at First Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 1) by Susan Hatler and this review was given freely.
Engaging, fast paced and easy flowing with realistic characters, Ellen and Henry's story is one of the pitfalls of dating and validates taking a chance on attraction/love at first sight.

2 Truth or Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 2)A Woodward Systems Corporation Romance by Susan Hatler
5 stars
I purchased the short novella Truth or Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 2) by Susan Hatler and this review was given freely.
Gina's story is romantic, fast paced, captivating and thoroughly heartwarming. Spurred on by one of Ellen's bridesmaids, Gina finally moves out of the apartment she was sharing with long term boyfriend George and in with fellow bridesmaid Kristen. Unfortunately, Gina finally notices Chris just as he is leaving the company.

3 My Last Blind Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 3) A Woodward Systems Corporation Romance by Susan Hatler
4 stars
I purchased the short story My Last Blind Date (Better Date than Never Series Book 3) by Susan Hatler and this review was given freely.
Rachael's story is a wham bam first date to love short workplace romance with Noah that happens on Valentine's Day. Disappointing in its brevity. It is sweet and good but is over almost as soon as it is started.

Love at First Date
Cute and sweet and fluffy. This story is really quite light-hearted, but at the same time it takes on the big topic of expectations – both our own and those of others. There’s an old saying I remember hearing somewhere that amounts to: when a human plans, the gods laugh. Ellen’s dating experiences are a pretty good example of this. I loved watching Ellen learn that you can’t plan for everything, and that sometimes the best things in your life are a little different than you thought they’d be.
Truth or Date
This was a fun, mostly light-hearted read, but there’s still some angsty emotional turmoil in here. I’m not really a fan of love triangles, however, since this story is so sweet for the most part, I was able to overlook what would normally bother me and just enjoy Gina’s journey to her happy ever after. I loved seeing Gina get honest with herself in order to get there, even if it did take a couple of dares to do it. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next in the series.
My Last Blind Date
Oh my gosh! This story goes by in a flash, but it’s just so stinkin’ cute. And really, that’s probably my only complaint about this book – it’s just too short for these fantastic characters. There’s also such a very powerful lesson in their interactions that could have powered a much longer story about them: sometimes we don’t, or even can’t, see what’s right in front of us.

I had previously purchased the first two of the these books while they were on sale and also have a couple of the later ones in the series that I must have picked up on the free days. I hadn't gotten around to reading them so when I found the first three in the boxed set on Net Galley I was pretty excited to schedule time for them. I am not going to go into much detail in them as they are summed up well in their synopsis and are all pretty short. I will however give you the reading order of the first seven at the end of this review. (I was able to find all six in a box set and get the reading order!) which is exciting as I would love to read them all.
"Half an hour with the miniature male and already I wasn't meeting his needs. If he weren't attached to my lease, he'd probably ditch me."
I really enjoy Susan's style of writing. It is fun and lighthearted. I noted so many places that had me giggling out loud or snickering to myself. They are all about a group of friends who are hitting the thirty mark and either leaving relationships and getting back into the dating world or finding their matches. They are cute, short, have happy endings. Very easy and quick reads and I enjoyed them immensely. I love that I am getting to read about ladies in a more mature age group finding love. While I love my New Adult books, I am much further along than that age group and can probably relate a lot better to the ladies in these books. It didn't hurt that the first book, Love at First Date, involved an adorable puppy going to obedience class. Me being an animal lover, it definitely pulled the heart strings and added some relatablility factor to it. And while the books do end in HEA's, the women are far from optimistic in their futures with dating.
"That my nightly routine of watching reality TV with my new boyfriend, Cookie Dough Ice Cream, had finally caught up with me. He may be high in calories, but at least he doesn't have a fear of commitment."
Susan has the first six in a box set on Amazon so if you are interested in reading them, I would definitely go that route. While all the books are about characters that are intertwined with the series, I do believe they could all be read as stand-alones. The first three that I read certainly could. I look forward to continuing this series and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fun, funny, fast, quick read! I will be adding her other books (not sure if they are part of series or not, I need to do some more research) to my wish list. Series Order: Love at First Date Truth or Date My Last Blind Date Save the Date A Twist of Date License to Date Driven to Date is book #7 according to Amazon There is another book on her author page, An Unexpected Date, however I do not know for sure if it is part of this series or not.

To read this review and others like it check out my site at www.homelovebooks.com

I don't usually review more than one book in one post, but because this is a box set and they are relatively short, I am going to make an exception this time.

Love At First Date: I really don't think the tone for this book worked for me, or rather the narrator's voice. Ella and I never made a connection throughout the story, I'm not sure why, I think it may have been the length of the story, but I really never felt very connected to her. I know a lot of women who can relate to Ella, who turn to the world of online dating to find the perfect guy because you are tired of picking the wrong one, but I felt like we were only scratching the surface. Personally, I think Ella needed more passion or just a little more spark, not just in her love life (which was painfully g rated) but also in her personality in general. Someone needed to give this short story a jolt of caffeine in order for me to really get invested.

Truth or Date: I liked this short story a bit more than the one before in the series. It was more cutesy, I mean there is almost no conflict in this short story, only a sense of obliviousness. Gina seems very oblivious to what's going on right in front of her, but there are no bad guys in this story. Just a good romance match up and friends who only want the best for each other. Unfortunately because there no real conflict, there isn't a lot to say about this novella, other than to say if you want a quick and sweet romance with a happily ever after then this might be your book.

My Last Blind Date: This short story almost drove me mad. First of all it's too short to really be anything. You don't have any time to get invested in the characters, its like the story was thrown together wham bam and done. It read a lot like a rough draft to me, I think this story had a lot of potential but it just wasn't fleshed out the way it needed to be in order to work.

Overall, I didn't really enjoy these stories as much as I wanted to. I don't tend to do well with novellas if I am not already invested in the characters or if the author doesn't have enough time for me to for a connection in such a short span of time. I like the messy and in a novella romance, sometimes it's almost impossible to have conflict when you have so little words to work with. I would only recommend these book if you are looking for short, simple reads, like when you have a few minutes to kill. It just didn't work for me.

(4 Stars) Ellen's story begins this set with Love at First Date. I love it when a person finds love in an unexpected place and that's just what happens with Ellen. She's got two "perfect" dates lined up from a dating site, but while watching her best friend's dog, she ends up at the vet and meets Henry.

Ellen is a fun person and is a magnet for trouble. I'm the biggest klutz ever, so it's fun to read about someone who isn't perfect and makes the best of her mishaps. The situations she finds herself in had me smiling and I always anticipated her encounters with Henry. He is such a great guy! I enjoy connecting with a couple and feeling like I'm tagging along with them. The dialogue is witty and fun, while the romantic tension is spicy, yet clean.

*****

(4.5 Stars) I honestly can't imagine wasting 10 years of my life with one person who won't buckle down and commit. That's just what Gina does in Truth or Date, and when the relationship is finally over, Gina doesn't want to take a chance on love again. Chris, a co-worker who is leaving the company, is hard to resist while they're pretending to be a couple. Good thing she has someone else lined up in her effort to try and move on!

I love how Gina reverts back to middle school, playing Truth or Dare with everyone around her. Sometimes those silly games lighten the mood up and make for a fun time. Of course, she'll never take a truth, which makes things interesting. Gina is spunky and not as confident as I thought she should be, or could be. Chris is amazing. She thinks he's way out of her league, but he's just a nice, flirty guy with a great reason for being so fickle when it comes to women.

*****

(3 Stars) My Last Blind Date is Rachel's story and was way too short for my taste! That's a good sign--I wanted more. I felt like I hardly got to know the characters as well as I wanted to, but it's still entertaining and fun.

It's Valentine's Day and Rachel is tempted to just stay at home with her dog. Innocent office flirting with Noah leaves her wishing for more, but not expecting it. Valentine's surprises await. Sweet and romantic, this story is great for a quick mid-day pick-me-up.

Content: all of these stories have mild romance and some mild innuendo (such as implied living together and intimate situations without details); no language, violence, or religious elements--just good clean fun. Clean!

This is a wonderful, fun, romantic series you shouldn't miss out on! Three in one is a great deal and every one of the stories will touch your heart and keep a smile on your face!

LOVE AT FIRST DATE (#1): Wonderful short story of Ellen's modern day search for love. This book was funny, sweet, cleverly written, heart warming and had a fantastic ending! I especially liked how the characters seemed real. Like people I'd know and be friends with, making it easy to relate to them and therefore the story. Gave me hope my Henry is out there... now if only I had a dog to take to obedience school! 4.5 stars

TRUTH OR DATE (#2): I LOVED Gina and Chris's story. I think it was very romantic how Chris used the ruse of needing a pretend girlfriend to spend time with Gina. Their role playing banter was fun and sweet at the same time. It was clear to me as a reader that Chris was totally smitten with Gina and had my head shaking at several points when Gina was just not getting it. Ms. Hatler has once again written a sigh worthy love story with a swoon worthy leading man and a realistic leading lady. Enjoyed revisiting with Gina's friends Rachel, Kristen, and of course, the bride, Ellen. Would have liked to have a little more of Henry, the groom. Overall this is a very engaging and romantic love story with a delightful HEA ending. 5 stars

MY LAST BLIND DATE (#3): Very sweet and romantic love story! Rachel finally gets her happy ending! Noah is a dreamy new coworker who after flirting with Rachel for months seizes the opportunity to make his move on Valentine's day! I really wish this story had been longer but what was there was wonderful! 4 stars

Better Date than Never Boxed Set

All 3 are sweet clean stories! (No Sex)

1) Love at First Date: I gave this one 3 stars. Its about a girl who is scared to get hurt in relationships so she tries to do online dating to make sure she not getting any surprises. When she stuck watching her best friends crazy dog she meets Henry at the vets and starts to question her way of thinking. The ending was very sweet.

2)Truth or Date: I liked this one the most i gave it 4.5 stars. Its about a girl who has been in a 10 year relationship with no commit. She finally gets wise and ends it, but having wasted 10 years she only looking for a guy ready to settle down. Not The hunky coworker who has a new date almost weekly. but a game of truth or dare takes care of that. Sweet story I really liked the Hero Chris.

3) My Last Blind Date: I liked this one too but it was the shortest of all 3. I gave it 3.5 stars. You got a girl who got cheated on by her boyfriend of 2 years. Her friends love her and are trying to set her up but it keep turn in to muck. She rather just stay with the only male who wont let her down....her dog. Then steps in her blind date for Valentine Day Sexy coworker Noah.

I received a free arc of this boxed set from net galley in exchange for an honest review. I love love love all of Susan's characters in this series. They are real people. Women I would probably call my friends if I knew them in real life. I had to read each story all the way through because I loved the characters so much!

Ellen's story was probably my favorite. maybe simply because it was the first in the series. But, Gina's story hit home with me since I recently went through a break up with a guy who was afraid of commitment. I'm still waiting for my happy ending though. I wish relationships were simpler like in these novellas! the last novella was my least favorite because Rachel's story seemed rushed. I thought it needed more development. But it was still a fun quick read.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a good romantic comedy. Especially novellas which I love!

For my chick-lit fix the Better Date than Never series hits the spot. This collection includes the first three books: Love at First Date, Truth or Date, and My Last Blind Date. The series follows a group of friends living and working in New York City. I love catching a glimpse of what it would be like to be a working woman in the city. I love reading about the girls' dating horror stories, and eventual successes. The stories are short, fun, and sassy. The characters are ones you would want to meet and befriend. I also appreciate that the content is clean. There may be some innuendo or talk about sleeping with past boyfriends, but the stories themselves are pretty PG. The series can be read out of order (I did it that way), but you will get more background information on the side characters if you read the series in order.

NOTE: A copy of this was provided by NetGalley for review.

I'd actually read the first of these novellas a year ago. I have to say, I think this reads better with the 3 stories together as the characters are very intertwined. It reads better as the set rather than separately, in my opinion. Each of the girls has had dating issues and each find their HEA when they didn't quite expect it. The 3rd story in this set seemed very short compared to the other two, not that I went back and checked actual page numbers.

Overall, a short, easy read. Good for a few hours of downtime.

Received these books as ARC for review.

The first book was 2.5 stars. Sweet boy meets girl. But ssssoooo G rated. Needed more than one kiss.

The second book 3.5 stars. I love romances that have the characters communicating and flirting via text messaging. Still serious G rated and still needs more than one kiss.

The third book was 2 stars. I read it in 20 minutes. I'm glad I didn't pay for it. There wasn't even a kiss.

A very romantic and fun series. For me it missed the sexual content I enjoy to read about. This book lacked that for me. But if you want a squeaky clean romantic series this is for you. This is why I rated it a 3 Star.
