Rome in 1978 is the setting for this tale of a Pope allied with the Soviets and a trusted cardinal who becomes convinced he must betray the Prince of the Church he is sworn to serve
a so-so Papal thriller, one of my guilty pleaseures. This is a first novel by R.S. Scotti but to cut her a bit of slack it was written 25 years ago and we have progressed somewhat in the Papal genre. Set in the last days of the reign of Paul VI the plot is built around a 'red brigade' plan to kid nap Paul and make the Church and Italy bow down to the inevitable revolution. Some of the elements of the story work quite nicely...oters, especially some of the characters are just too cardboard for my liking, though admittedly that is a flaw with the thriller genre rather than Scotti.
