About the author

Christopher John Barnard was Professor of Animal Behaviour at the School of Biology of Nottingham University where he had spent his professional career. After graduating in Zoology from Liverpool in 1975 with a First and the Biological Society Prize, he took his DPhil from Oxford in 1978 under the supervision of John Krebs. Immediately appointed to a lectureship in Nottingham in 1978, he founded the research group in Behaviour & Ecology and led from the front, building it into an internationally recognised centre of research excellence. He created, developed and ran successful degree courses in Behavioural Science, Environmental Life Science and Evolutionary Biology; and fostered the careers of undergraduates, postgraduates and colleagues with great care and foresight.
