If you are easily frustrated or struggle with outbursts of anger, Turn Away Wrath offers a scriptural solution. Written by seasoned counselor Rand Hummel, Turn Away Wrath uncloaks the enemy its source, excuses, and consequences and offers strategic help for banishing anger through step-by-step instructions and Scripture meditation. Turn Away Wrath: Meditations to Control Anger and Bitterness has grown out of Rand Hummel s experience counseling men and women who have been controlled by anger."
What a powerful, little book! Hummel carefully dissects almost every scripture on anger and bitterness, using a biblical encyclopedia and biblical dictionary to restate them in words that every reader can clearly understand. Each meditation is scripture-driven and convicted me to the point of exhaustion. He gives such a clear picture of what our anger and bitterness looks like to God, leaving no room for our sinful excuses. Hummel prefaces the book by stating that he himself grew up in an angry, dysfunctional home and constantly struggled with anger and bitterness. It was reassuring to know that he wasn’t simply speaking from the outside; he has been on the inside of anger and bitterness. He has lived with the anger of others and struggled against his personal bitterness. His experience lent credibility to the fiery exposition and the bold honesty. I have never been so slapped in the face by a book, but I can honestly say, if it wouldn’t have been written from a person on the inside of the issue, it would have been so, so, so hard to swallow. This book has certainly helped me in my Christian walk.
3.5 stars. I think it was very good, I just feel like in the “Now think about it” sections, the author takes a bit of liberty to reword the verses. Also, in one of the meditations, #13 to be exact, he seems to insinuate that you could be angry enough to lose your salvation…? Maybe he didn’t mean that, but I got that “Vibe” as well as a couple of other ladies in the Bible study group and my husband also when I showed it to him. Overall, though, I believe this book is needful and I will definitely go back to it in the future.
This in-depth study of anger was eye opening for me. Realizing that all anger is a sin against God (with the small exception of anger against sin… not the sinner) blew me away. Anger is the darling sin of many Christians, excused as ‘righteous indignation.’ (Those words never appear in the Bible, btw.) I highly recommend this devotional to everyone, learn how to handle your anger before it destroys your relationships!
