A deer, like any other animal in the forest, has to be brave to survive. Dearie need not be brave like a lion or tiger. He does not have to fight any other animal . After all, he is a deer. What Dearie needs is sufficient courage to have his wits about him and flee when there is any threat of danger. The sooner he takes to his heels, the better are his chances of survival. But Dearies is possibly the most timid deer that ever lived. At the first whiff of danger, real or imagined, he freezes and stays where he is. When his fear becomes a threat to the herd, Dearie must leave the herd and live alone, alone with his fears amidst the dangers that abound all around him.

Dearie by Gita V. Reddy Story of a deer as they grow up. The mother has taught her things to help her survive in the woods and what to watch out for. Excerpt from a Cinderella story is included. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end. I received this review copy from the author and this is my honest review.
MY THOUGHTS A great learning book for children on how to rely on yourself. The book has some easy to understand drawing that go with the short chapters. Sometimes new and young readers feel overwhelmed by a long book. But with the book, it's short and gets the point across. Perfect for those young ones who are fearful of long books. We have a deer and such a sweet name it has, Dearie. Dearie appears to be weak and you're not sure if Dearie can survive in the world. But Dearie soon becomes strong independent. But Dearie still had some problems. He was afraid of danger. He just didn't know what to do and he absolutely froze. Finally the herd decides that Dearie has to go and learn how to master his fears. He has to learn how to survive. That means facing wild animals. That would be enough to scare anyone. What is going to happen to Dearie? Can he survive with a courage that he must find? OR will he forever be on his own, freezing at the least hint of danger? He misses his herd but he can't go back until he conquers his fears. If your young one has some fears and is worried about things, get them this little book and help them as they read it. The story helps you see the strong points you have and how you can put them to use. From the book: ‘The Wise Old Doe looked at Dearie. Never was born such a delicate fawn in the forest. She murmured, “The poor little thing will not live through the night. How his heart palpitates through his skinny ribs! I’m sure he’ll die.” Will the Wise Old Doe be right? We need as many of these teaching books that we can possibly get. Children need direction on everything.
I received a copy of this book from the author, Ms. Gita Reddy and voluntarily decided to review it.
I received this book as a free e-book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Dearie The Deer is a short chapter book which could be read independently by a reader about age 8-10 or could be read to a child a little younger so the adult reader could help explain and discuss concepts or words which might not be familiar. There are occasional small black silhouette pictures interspersed into the story of Dearie, a young deer who is afraid of everything around him.I think the story would be more interesting to young readers if there had been an increased use of pictures.
The story itself can be considered an inspirational one. From the time of his birth, Dearie has been considered weak and frail and in need of extra care from the herd. Although he grows physically strong, his fear puts him in danger and also endangers the herd as a whole. The Wise Old Doe suggests that Dearie be left on his own so he can learn to face his fears and survive. The rest of the story tells the reader how Dearie learns to cope. For a child dealing with fears and worries, this story encourages recognizing the strengths you have and using them.
Included in the kindle version are summaries of other books by the author.
Beginning chapter book of approximately thirty-five pages which is just right for a new or reluctant reader. The protagonist is a deer named Dearie. At first, it appeared that Dearie was too weak and frail to survive. Beating the odds, he soon grew strong and fast. As time went on, a bigger problem surfaced. Whenever danger appeared, Dearie froze. He could not respond to danger. That put the rest of the herd at risk.
Despite the pleadings of his mother, it is agreed that Dearie must leave the herd to learn how to overcome his fears and master the skills needed to survive. Dearie must face wild boar, wolves, lions and crocodiles. Will Dearie find his courage, and more importantly, will he ever rejoin his beloved herd?
This is an animal coming of age story that teaches children we all must not be afraid how to learn to be independent. Simple pen and ink drawings accompany the short chapters. I think the plot begins a bit slowly; the real story unfolds halfway through the book in Chapter 5. Recommended as an independent read for eight to ten year olds or for reluctant readers who feel challenged by the length of most middle grade chapter books. Short enough to be used as a read aloud classroom discussion.
This is my first book from this author but I can tell you that I will be adding her to my author list and sending her book to my grandchildren. I have to say I was very impressed, she took a very important issue and made it into a story that a wide range of children could read (or be read to) and gain a sense of understanding from. Children are so easily frightened but when they can relate building a strength from animals it would be easy for them to understand. I myself was drawn into the story and felt myself trying to help Dearie through this very terrifying time. Of course he did it all by himself without my help, plus along the way he became very strong. LOL. It didn't stop me from trying though. The story line flows really well and the author is very adept in the details so you feel in the groove with the animals as it moves along. The opportunity the author gave us to use this story as a teaching tool to help children to overcome fear is awesome. If you need some help building your own self esteem and getting over being scared just check out how Dearie handled it!
This is a short chapter book which can either be read by a beginning reader or read to a pre-reader by an adult. The pictures are small black silhouttes of Dearie and other animals in the story.
I found the story itself to be an inspirational one. Dearie is frail and weak at birth, and the herd continues to treat him that way even as he grows, so he continues to react to situations in that manner as well. When his fear threatens the entire herd, they turn him out, forcing him to live alone and face his fears. From there, we learn about his journey to find courage and strength. Will he be able to return to the herd, or will he be forced to be alone forever?
This would be a good teaching tool for children who deal with fears and anxiety, showing them how to find their inner strength.

this book reminds me of a fable. it is a great read aloud to children, and carries a great message. parents also can receive an important message from this story as well.
Wow! What a moving and touching animal story this was and a short one too but well worth the reading. I want to recommend this for kids ages 8-12+ who loves to read short, clean animal stories. I received this for free and in return, here now is my honest review. Great job Gita! By Angela
